So the Cubs are paying 1.5mil of Barrett's remaining salary. WOW

http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/cubs.asp

“Michael has been a guy that we've all grown to appreciate quite a bit as far as the type of human being he's been for the Cubs,” general manager Jim Hendry said. “We felt he was well on his way to being a terrific player, an all-star caliber player. This year, he's had a little tougher time defensively, and a lot of it's probably from trying too hard. Maybe just some of it's the last year of his deal. But he's been a really, really good offensive player, and the first couple years, a lot of improvement defensively. We've had a little bit of a rougher time the first half this year.

“Se we felt like we needed to make a change.”

I'm surprised he got so specific as to the reasons for trading Barrett. Usually it's more of a "we really liked what he did for us but we like what the new guy does as well".

For someone who just woke up, can anyone give me the cliff notes version of this thread?

We've traded Barrett for Rob Bowen and Kyler Burke.

Rob Bowen is a backup C who was a nice prospect for the Twins about five years ago, but he's sorta flamed out... Still only 26 though. And he does have a nice walk rate with about average power. Problem is that he can't make any contact. And, ironically enough, depending on which metric is looked at, he might be worse defensively than Barrett (though no scouting reports back this up).

Kyler Burke is a 19 year old right fielder in A ball who was drafted in the supplemental round last year (35th overall). He's about as toolsy as they come, but he hasn't put up anything even resembling good numbers (aside from his walk rate). His arm is strong enough that if he continues to flame out, he can be converted to a reliever.

There's also money involved, but conflicting reports of who the money is going to. Though it has to be assumed it's going to the Padres.

Even though I hate this trade, I really think Barrett is on the downward slope and don't see him making an all star team in the next few years.

Cubs trade Barrett and cash to the Padres for Bowen and a low-A outfielder who was drafted in the supplemental round of last year's draft. No word on if Bowen is our new starting catcher, or if this means Soto will be called up to be the starting catcher.

The best part was when the rumored trade was Barrett and EPatt for Bowen and Linebrink. Everyone was going insane.

Considering who the Twins had blocking him at Catcher...I don't know that their willingness to move him necessarily makes him a flame out.

Just woke up? I should have been a teacher.

But think about the children.

Consider the youth of America....could I have really done anymore damage?

As usual, Mike Downey has a hysterically bad article about this in the Trib...

Barrett wasn't unpopular in Chicago, but he became as controversial a figure as has played here in many a year. It all began at U.S. Cellular Field, where it wasn't enough for him to curse at A.J. Pierzynski or even to bump him in the chest after a play at home plate -- no, Barrett had to pop him right in the face, in front of nearly 40,000 Chicago baseball fans, including children.

What a bunch of bullplop journalism.

How does this affect Barrett's pledge to contribute to Project 3000?

He and DLee are friends. It shouldn't change anything.

I'm guessing he will either have to mail D. Lee a check or send him paypal payments or something. I'm sure they will work it out.

:P

I know, but wasn't it tied to some sort of performance metric?

His numbers are more of the problem than the Twins willingness to move him.

the "including children" part is hysterically bad. I am crying over here.

True...but they "seem" to be improving...a year ago this board would have been happy to add a .370 OBP no matter where it came from...if he's a lot better behind the plate, I think I like this trade.

What does the All-Star game have to do with being good? I thought it was a popularity contest.
