barrett for bowen and A prospect OF Kyler Burke. Extremely mixed opinions on both. Burke very raw but has big potential to break or bust.

I have a friend who does a lot of stuff with the Minor leagues, and he says that Burke is a legit prospect. He definitely has the capability of breaking out. His future is not written like other prospects. I trust his opinion, so that was good to hear.

It'll depend on Cubs player development - he's extremely raw and has struggled in pro ball.

has hendry re-decided he likes guys who can catch the ball?

I think Hendry has always had the desire to have a solid defense up the middle.

So for some reason he signs the likes of Todd Walker and Michael Barrett?

i love that people are criticizing barrett's "game calling." as if, 1) they know anything about how to call a game and can tell that barrett's doing a poor job of it and 2) pitchers don't have the ability to shake him off.

Thank you.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels this way.

Soto caught a few days ago, see if he can handle a couple more and then call him up. Bowen looks to be at the very least a good backup and I've been wanting to see soto for a while with his offensive production along with good defense(or so i've been told). There was really no way that barret was going to sit back quietly if they called soto up and let him play for a few weeks or longer. So in that regard, i guess i'm not too ticked off with the trade. I just still haven't decided if i like it or not.

Bowen's value will be hard to quantify. It's hard to visually notice that someone has a lower ratio of botching defensive plays. It's even harder to tell the impact with the naked eye.

not to speak ill of or hope for injury on someone, but I really hope this trade signals that Henry Blanco's career is over. I could live with Soto/Bowen at catcher for a couple/few years.

Then again, Hendry really does not have a plan.

I for one am gonna miss Michael. IMO he was the best hitting catcher the Cubs have had since Jody Davis. Sure, his defense was lacking, but with the offensive inconsistancy of this team, I think it hurts the Cubs more than helps. Unless, like I said before, if this is a prelude to a bigger trade.

not to mention that pitches came from the bench at least half the time when Dusty was managing the Cubs and Barrett was catching.

I'd like to see it broken down into PCERA - pitching coach ERA.

Perhaps Bowen has some intangibles that aren't being mentioned yet.

Something I've noticed with Hill(and presumably all good defensive catchers) as opposed to Barrett(and the broadcast pointed it out quite a bit as well) is that he seems to "frame" pitches better than Barrett ever did... if that gets our pitchers 3-5 more strike calls at the right time during a game that could be a big deal...and has nothing to do with "calling" the game...but is really something that you can't "measure"

i was just about to post this same thing. I have noticed that far a while now, but not sure if was going to get blasted for saying it. I'm not exactly the catching fundamentals expert.

My feelings on the trade are thus:

For a giveaway trade, it could have been worse. Thankfully the Cubs gave up nothing else of value, and nothing they got back is blocking anything important. Not that the trade had to be made in the first place, but they didn't get fleeced.

I'm just hoping that by late 2009 or the beginning of 2010 we could have at least one solid starting catcher and one quality backup from the trio of Soto, Donaldson and Bowen.

We have the potential to get adequate-solid production from the catcher spot to go along with good defense at a low cost for the next 5 years.

I think they leaked the earlier story of Patterson being included so that we'd all be more satisfied that they just gave away Barrett. :D

So what's the plan with our catching situation for the rest of the year? Just bend over and grab our ankles like we do at SS?

Hey, that's a good poll. Are we worse with Izturis at SS or a Bowen/Hill combo at C?
