LaRussa had to call Hancock's father and inform him. I can't imagine how hard of a call that would be.

How sad.

what?

why wasn't the coroner's office / the police the party to do this?

No clue.

And can we update the thread title to include his name? "Cardinals pitcher"? Come on.

How does the coroner's office know how to get a hold of Hancock's parents? If he was married I would assume they would send a cop to the house. But if he's single I assume contacting his employer would be the quicker route rather than having to break out the phonebooks and calling people in his hometown with the same last name.

Apparently LaRussa wanted to be the one to contact Hancock's father.

This was what I assumed - the Cardinals have always considered themselves a family.

How incredibly sad.

Any group as small as a baseball team that works together full time becomes like family. I'd imagine the rest of the bullpen was much closer to him than say the middle infielders, just because of practicing in groups and where they spend gametime, but it doesn't take much time at all for small groups like that to become quite close. I definitely feel for the Cards players, let alone the guy's family.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch[/url]"]Hancock's Ford Explorer slammed into the rear of a tow truck that was parked in the far left westbound lane shortly after 12:30 a.m. The tow truck driver, who was seated in the vehicle at the time, was unhurt.

He told police that his emergency lights were on, and that he honked his horn when he saw the Explorer approaching in his rear view mirror, but that the Exploer didn't slow down or swerve to avoid the collision.

At the time of the accident, the tow truck driver was assisting a motorist from an earlier accident.

Hancock, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene.

When reading that, I don't want to make any early assumptions but......

How the hell do you die from rear ending someone? Unless it's some kind of gruesome Final Destination type thing.

Tow truck vs. Explorer. Tow truck wins big time.

He might not have been wearing a seatbelt.

That's what came to my mind first.

Regardless of whether he was or wasn't, RIP. I just hope he wasn't over the legal BAC limit.

I just saw a picture of his Ford Explorer. You can see it on MSNBC if you wish, but I will not link to it here.

The entire driver's side of his car is mangled, to put it mildly. I don't think the seatbelt would have made a lick of difference.

Holy Crap

Now I know where I remember the name from. Josh Hancock is the brother of Jon-Jon Hancock, who was the DH on my Ole Miss team.

Man that sucks. I'll make sure to write him an email and send him my condolences.

Just terrible

I think it shows an incredible amount of class and dignity on the part of Tony LaRussa. What a tragedy.

My thoughts are out to Josh Hancock's family, friends, teammates, and the entire St. Louis Cardinals organization.

Wow. Just checked that out and yeah, a seatbelt wouldn't have mattered.

I just saw it and you're right. It's totally mangled.

And my mind didn't immediately go to alcohol. It was fairly early, he could have been tired, messing with the radio, etc. If the tow truck was parked in the left lane, he could have thought it was just slow moving, looked to the right to see if he could get over, looked back and it was too late. Any number of things.

And if he had a drinking problem bad enough to be driving drunk on Sunday morning, wouldn't it be common knowledge?

Holy cow that car was mangled. Hopefully for his sake, it was quick.

There was an article in the Post yesterday that most of the team was going to some sort of fundraiser at the Fox Theater last night. Something with Bob Costas and maybe Sheryl Crow. Can't recall the details.

I wonder if he was coming from that.

No matter really. Just sad.

We were to go to the game tonight. Obviously the right decision to cancel the game. Wouldn't have wanted to go.

so, did another game get bumped up for tonight's espn slot or are they just showing some other programming?

Too late to move another game.

I'm guessing poker reruns.

Goodness...

It's a shame, really. At least juding from the photos of his car, it was probably quite quick.
