I can't remember, was it Joe Girardi that made the speech at Wrigley Field the day Darryl Kile died?

Yes.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch[/url]"]Hancock's Ford Explorer slammed into the rear of a tow truck that was parked in the far left westbound lane shortly after 12:30 a.m. The tow truck driver, who was seated in the vehicle at the time, was unhurt.

He told police that his emergency lights were on, and that he honked his horn when he saw the Explorer approaching in his rear view mirror, but that the Exploer didn't slow down or swerve to avoid the collision.

At the time of the accident, the tow truck driver was assisting a motorist from an earlier accident.

Hancock, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene.

When reading that, I don't want to make any early assumptions but......

How the hell do you die from rear ending someone? Unless it's some kind of gruesome Final Destination type thing.

I'm going to bite my tongue on this until more information comes out, but I'm worried about what this early information is pointing to. I have a feeling it'll be a long week in the media if my worst fears are true.

Tow truck vs. Explorer. Tow truck wins big time.

What? It said it was on the highway. Think of how fast he would have been going.

He might not have been wearing a seatbelt.

Ahh, I guess I didn't catch that.

Three things...

-It depends on how fast he was going. Considering he was in the left hand lane of a major highway, he probably was doing at least the speed limit (which could be anything from 55 to 70) and apparently didn't slow down. Once you go above a certain speed and get into a collision, your odds dropoff significantly even if you're wearing a seatbelt and have airbags.

-I don't know what kind of towtruck it was and what the position of all of its equipment was, but it could well have been a Final Destination type of thing. There's equipment back there which can jam through a windshield dependng on its position and whatnot.

-If he wasn't wearing a seatbelt, then that would do it.

????

C'mon man. The tow truck was probably stopped on the side of the road, hence the emergency lights. Car traveling 60 mph rear ends another car that is stopped = bad news for the car going 60. He probably got thrown threw the windshield.

The worst thing I want to happen to any member of an opposing team is to lose to the Cubs.

My thoughts go out to his family and teammates.

I wonder if he fell alseep at the wheel? Just so you know I'm not trying to make light of the situation.

Could...be...12:30 is kind of early for falling asleep though.....

Texting or fiddlling with a Cell phone or IPOd is possible though....those things are really distracting.

How tragic. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I assume they'll do a day-night double header in the September series.

Nah, they'll probably make it up on 7/23. Both teams are off that day, and have a three game set starting the following day in St. Louis. I'd be shocked if it were any day but then.

What does "final desination" mean. I'm googling and getting what looks like a crappy movie.

It's just an old philosophical term that Aristotle used for untimely deaths.

LaRussa had to call Hancock's father and inform him. I can't imagine how hard of a call that would be.

How sad.

That would be it. I think the second movie had a scene where some of the characters were driving behind and rear-ended a big rig with something like boards of wood or pipes sticking out the back, which shot through their windshield.
