AFC Championship: Colts vs. Patriots - Sun Jan 21, 5:30 CST

All of you can join the hating New England party. I've been doing it since this:

http://infohost.nmt.edu/~dsandov1/TuckRule.jpg

But I also want Manning to win a Super Bowl. Right when Indy won on Saturday, I knew the Patriots were going to win (even put money on them straight up). I knew there was no way Peyton was going to make a Super Bowl without beating New England along the way in the playoffs.

I could care less how it happens also. Of course I would like to see Brady stink it up. But if Brady has a huge game, Manning doesn't but the Colts win, that's fine with me. So here's hoping for a Indy victory next Sunday.

Too bad I hate the Raiders, so that picture brings back only fond memories. :P

I also dislike the Colts. I like Manning, but for some sadistic reason, I want to see the Colts' run of postseason futility continue for as long as possible.

Plus, I think New England getting to the Superbowl gives the Bears the best chance for a win. Slightly.

I too share this scheudenfreude with the Colts. I love to see them fail.

Stopping the Jets and the Ravens is not.

It was the Chiefs and Ravens. Considering how dismal the Indy defense had been against the run over the final weeks of the season, holding opponents to an average of 70-75 YPG on the ground was pretty impressive.

You're right, my bad.

Even worse IMO though. Chiefs had no business there. Still not impressive.

If a student of mine scores an F on 10 consecutive tests, and then scores a C on a couple, I say "hey nice improvement" but not "that was impressive." Shut Brady down though? In the AFC Championship? Yeah, then I'll hand it to them.

Go Colts. The image of the Patriots standing on the Chargers logo doing the Shawne Merriman dance was enough to push me over to the Indy side. (That, and I think Tom Brady is the most overrated QB on the planet. 3 picks today. He got bailed out when McCree fumbled. If that had happened to any other QB, they'd be talking about how lucky he was that his receiver bailed him out with a good strip.)

Anyone see Tomlinson's press conference after? I have a feeling he's rooting for the Colts too. Never thought I'd see him use the word "classless".

Agree on Brady. Brady is nothing more then Chad Pennington with SB rings. Does that mean Brady is a GREAT QB, of course, nor am I saying he is a bad QB, he is just overrated. Peyton Manning is still the better QB.

I like the Patriots when they beat the Rams (due to the Rams being in St. Louis, come on Chicago, you can't ever root for a St. Lou team) and I was partially to Adam Vintieri.

With that said, I should be thankful for the Patriots and the Ravens, seeing as Robbie Gould was given a shot with both clubs.

If I was the Saints and Bears, I would be rooting hard for the Colts to win. I would not want to face Belichick in the Super Bowl after he's had two weeks to prepare for the game.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking too.

No way would I want to face off against Belichek in a Super Bowl, especially since it would become a huge revenge game for New England, in addition to being a Super Bowl which they've never lost.

I'd gladly take the Colts and Peyton over all that nasty synergy.

The Patriots have lost at least one Super Bowl that I know of.... January 26, 1986. Bears 46 - Patriots 10. :D (I know you're probably just referring to Brady and Belichick, but I had to bring it up)

They lost to the Packers in 1996 also.

The impressive thing about the Colt defense in the postseason so far is not that they shut down two decent offenses.

The impressive thing is that they stopped arguably the second best running back in the game, Larry Johnson, and another former Pro Bowl tailback, Jamal Lewis. The pass defense has rarely been attacked, its the run defense that has been doubted and they faced formidable foes.

Comparing him to Chad Pennington is a bit harsh. Watch Tom Brady play a bit more often, the guy can make some really great throws and pretty much has carried his team this year.

I don't even like defending the guy, but someones gotta play devil's advocate. Tom Brady might be overrated, but he's still a fantastic QB. Look at how consistent his stats are. He always manages 28 or so TD's, lower than 14 Ints, and around 3500-4000 yards passing. He's done this for the past 6-7 years.

Pennington's image is hurt by his injury history. Brady hasn't been hurt since he took the starting job from Bledsoe.

ugh, i'm gonna have to miss the last 2 hours of this game... our first Special Olympics swim practice is on Sunday.

I'm surprised you can still muster up the desire to watch football after watching the Eagles get knocked out. Seriously.

When the Bears lost in 05 and 01, I couldn't watch another playoff game. The 2003 NLCS was even worse on me. I didn't watch one pitch of that World Series. I guess I'm just a baby. :?

Even while healthy, Penning hasn't even been CLOSE to Brady in production.

Brady does it with worse receiving options to boot.

I'm rooting against whoever wins this game in the Super Bowl. I can't stand either the Pats or Colts.

That said, I'm picking New England.

He hasn't been as good, but he has been close.

In 2002 (15 games) Pennington threw for 3120 yards and 22 TDs. Brady threw for 3764 yards and 28 TDs.

This year (16 games) Pennington threw for 3352 yards and 17 TDs. Brady threw for 3529 yards and 24 TDs.

And Pennington isn't exactly throwing to prolific receivers, he's got Lavernaeus (sp?) Coles, Jerricho Cotchery, Justin McCareins and Brad Smith. Brady has Jabar Gaffney, Reche Caldwell, Chad Jackson and Troy Brown.

Pennington has better weapons, but not significantly.

EDIT: Just FYI, in the same years Peyton has thrown for 4200 yards and 27 TDs (2002) and 4397 yards and 31 TDs (2006).

Sure, Peyton can chuck the ball, but they play in different schemes. Brady isn't asked to throw for 4,000+ yards in his offensive system.

With that said, its hard to compare anyone because of how much scheme, offensive line, wide receivers and running game weigh on someone's statistics.

Colts may very well blow out the Pats. I saw the Pats beating the Jets, Chargers, Ravens, and Chiefs, but not the Colts. As much as they have owned the Colts, I think this is the last team NE wanted to see. First of all, it's inside. Secondly, the Colts were constructed to beat the Patriots in the playoffs. I don't think there has ever been a more motivated team in playoff history than the Colts will be this week. I think it's almost personal for them.

It's hard, but it doesn't mean it's invalid. Peyton threw 557 times, completing 362. Brady threw 516 times and completed 319. So there is a 41 attempt difference between the players, but that's not that significant a difference. That's 2.5 passes per game more for Peyton.

A comparison that, while not perfect, is a more scheme/attempts/style-exclusive is QB rating. Brady's was 87.9 this year, Pennington's was 82.6 and Peyton's was 101.

Interesting.

If it's not it should be.

This is Peyton's best shot to get to the Super Bowl. Sure the Colts played a few years ago in the AFC title game, but it was on the road. To be at home against a team that they have already beat once this year leaves them with no excuses if they don't get it done.

Posted
If the Colts' defense can be anywhere close to the past 2 weeks, I think the Colts should definitely win this game. I dont see Manning having 3 horrible weeks in a row, he's going to be motivated like never before.

I don't think, even if he wanted to, Brady could do 4,000 yrds in a season, without it taking a severe toll on his arm. I believe Brady is more a system's QB then Peyton Manning.

So, again, I'm standing the comparasion of Brady:: Pennington. Cause without Belichek, Brady would be a journeyman QB, prolly playing in Arizona right now.

On PTI they just said Dungy gave the team Sunday, Monday, and Today off. It's one of those things that probably doesn't make a huge difference, but if the Colts lose Dungy will get some heat.

P.S. Go Bears!

At this point, the hay is in the barn. Rest is more important that practicing your blocking, pass routes, etc. If you don't know how to do those things by this point in the season, you aren't going to learn it now. Rest is most important to a lot of these guys.

They've already played the Pats, they know what to expect. The next few days will just be game preparation and brushing up on what the Patriots might throw at them.

That's their normal routine for months now (I think from Halloween on every year, but maybe even further back then that), so it just makes sense now to try to keep as close to normal of a routine as possible rather than trying to decide what to do with an extra day of practice.

I'm rooting for the asteroid for now, but if the Bears win early Sunday, I want the Colts to win. A Bears/Colts Super Bowl might lead to all-out warfare here in Muncie. I wouldn't mind seeing one.

Colts-Saints please.

Two of the more tolerable teams for me.
