A trade will happen soon. It has to.

Take a look at the number of arms the Cubs have in the bullpen:

1. Dempster

2. Howry

3. Eyre

4. Wood

5. Wuertz

6. Novoa

7. Aardsma

8. Ohman

That also doesn't include the possibility that Ryu, Guzman, OMalley, Marmol, or Mateo all could be used out of the pen.

As we have speculated in other threads, someone from this bullpen will get moved. Likely more than one.

O'Malley shouldn't even be included in this group, in my opinion. Rapada probably should be. I believe either Marmol or Mateo will be dealt, and with Rapada ready, either Ohman or Eyre will probably be dealt, as well.

why would marmol be dealt? he actually seemed to show some pretty nice potential. Are you assuming he would be a valuable part of a big deal, or are you thinking about giving guys away (ala Juan Cruz)?

ohman had pretty good peripherals, if he can get that walk rate down. Wuertz had good peripherals too (good job having him in the minors most of the year, cubs). Novoa's peripherals were mediocre... I think I'd make him one of the odd men out.

I think either he or Mateo could be included as part of a deal, not as the lone piece in a trade.

The 3 I would not like to see moved are..Eyre, Howry and Wuertz.

I would be fine dealing Eyre.

Me too. He'd probably be near the top of the list of guys I'd be willing to trade.

Same here. He's on the top of the list of the bullpen that I would move. Actually I'd be more than willing to move any of those guys, with maybe the exception of Howry and Wuertz, if it could net us a good starting pitcher or a quality outfielder.

This is one of the areas in which the cubs have alot of depth in.

Well, that and middle infielders with almost no spectacular tools.

Izturis

Derosa

Theriot

Cedeno

EPatt

Deal 2 of 'em...

I think are bullpen pieces, Jones, Cedeno,Iztuirz, plus all the young major league ready pitching the Cubs have to trade and salary to work with it wouldn't suprize me to see Hendry make a run at a big bat via trade like Dunn,Manny,Well,A.Jones.

Catchers on the 40 man roster (assuming Fox gets added this winter)

Barrett

Hank

Soto

Reyes

Fox

I really think one of these guys needs to be removed from the 40 man. We really don't need more than three catchers on the 40 man, actually.

Is Fox really a risk to be taken in Rule 5?

I don't think so. The new CBA gave the clubs another year of control before players become eligible for the Rule V.

Despite the new CBA, Fox is still eligible for the Rule 5 draft.

The question is, will a team take a flyer on a pretty competent bat who can't handle catcher defensively. I'm beginning to think no...

How many teams can afford to go with 3 catchers? Those teams that would only go with 2 catchers would be willing to sit a rookie on the bench all year? It seems like a stretch to me.

On the 40-man roster, not the 25-man. The third catcher would be in Iowa.

Unless the CBA changed the rule on drafted Rule 5 players, the team that drafted him would have to keep Fox on their 25 man roster all year in order to retain him.

How many teams can afford to carry a rookie catcher on their roster all season. How many can afford to carry a 3rd catcher? That's what I was getting at. It doesn't seem all that risky to me that they expose Fox to Rule V. If a team drafts him, work out a trade and call it good.

Looking back, it would have been nice to work out a trade for Sisco, Dubois and ole what's his name...... The guy drafted by Florida who has spent a better part of his Cub career injured.
