It wasn't a terrible idea to take Marshall out there, but as others have pointed out, Wuertz was the wrong guy for the situation. You don't bring in your most erratic reliever with the bases loaded.

Yeah, foot wasn't on the bag.

HAHA. "Ball gets there, and his foot is in the air....so that should have been an out." Great one, Morgan.

I think you leave him in there vs. Encarnacion, who hasn't hit anything all year. No way does Marshall face Pujols in that situation, either way. Give a groundball pitcher the chance to get a groundball. And I don't even mind putting Wuertz in. I'd rather throw him out there than to waste Williamson or Howry that early in the game.

Agreed. Also, Encarnacion doesn't hit LHP relatively well either.

Okay, that was safe, and the other two weren't?

Make up call for Lee -- who was clearly safe. I didn't see Murton's play.

I'm on Dusty's side on this one. If he left him in, and someone got a big hit, everyone here would be all "WHY DIDNT HE TAKE HIM OUT?! FIRE EM!" but I'm all up for not ruining a rookie's first start, and keeping a close game. We're better safe than sorry I guess.

Na, a lot of us here are process-not-results guys, e.g. - Neifi going 3-4 in the 2 hole was dumb regardless of outcome. Leaving Marshall in would also have been smart, regardless of outcome.

Would you guys be alright if he brought in, say, Eyre or Howry? Edited by Omar

Why wouldn't you want to put your best pitchers in there in the toughest situations? Just because it's early?

i wanted to leave him in just to see how he'd do. i think either one of them could have gotten encarnacion, who is awful. no way i'd let him face pujols either.

Bynum looks like one of those people in that Tom Cruise movie.

The only thing erratic about Wuertz is that he hasn't been used. He was the team's best reliever last season (outside of Dempster), and there was no need to waste your setup men (Williamson and Howry) who have pitched a lot in the 5th inning.
