FYI - completes the Leicester trade.

Cubs.com[/url]"]The Chicago Cubs today acquired left-handed pitcher Clint Brannon from the Texas Rangers, completing a November 16, 2005, trade for right-handed pitcher Jon Leicester.

Brannon, 23, was 9-7 with a 4.45 ERA in 29 games for Bakersfield (A) in 2005. The southpaw split time between the starting rotation and the bullpen - and was equally successful in both roles, going 5-4 as a starter and 4-3 as a reliever.

Brannon held opponents to a .250 average - including a .190-mark against left-handed batters. In addition, opponents hit just .225 with runners in scoring position.

The Searcy, AR, native had a career-high five-game winning streak June 18-July 20 - and hurled his first career complete game August 31.

Brannon was originally selected by Texas in the 34th round of the 2004 draft. He is 12-9 with a 3.08 ERA in 44 games (24 starts).

Leicester, 27, was 5-3 with 2 saves and a 4.80 ERA in 38 career games for the Cubs. The right-hander had spent his entire career in the Cubs' organization, going 29-37 with a 4.70 ERA in 153 minor league appearances.

He throws 4 pitches, his slider is his best pitch. His 4 seamer tops out in the upper 80s, his slider is in the 82-84 range, and his change is around 80.

He's developed his 2 seamer in the Rangers system, but stuff-wise he's probably a poor man's version of Andy Pratt, except with better control.

That's a ringing endorsement.

From an old BA chat:

Q:

Lance from Dallas asks: Hey Jim! Does Clint Brannon have a shot to pitch in the big leagues? I read were he seldom reaches 86 mph on his fastball, did he just out smart the young hitters at class A and will the more experienced hitters figure him out? Thanks!

A:

Jim Callis: Brannon set a Northwest League ERA record, but his stuff is kind of fringy. He needs to show he can have that kind of success against more experienced hitters.

If it's possible to have worse control than Andy Pratt, I'd like to see it.

Andy Pratt had very good stuff, just couldn't throw it for strikes.

I really hate it when sportswriters use W-L records for relievers to prove/disprove how good they are.

On a related note, Chad Cordero was 2-4 last year. What a useless pitcher.

Yeah they should trade that Cordero guy for Shawn Estes he usually has a nice W-L record, and everyone knows what a great pitcher he is. Is Shawn even still around? lol

I think I saw him on a west coast roster. Padres or Dodgers.

Did you see Ankiel in the postseason?

We had a definite contender for that title in last year's ST camp. His name was Stephen Randolph.

This is the obligatory annual move to bring in a mediocre LHP. Thankfully, this year the Cubs aren't counting on that guy to be their primary LH reliever (Pratt, Bartosh, S. Randolph).

Looks like anything the Cubs get out of Brannon will win the trade for them.

It is appearing more and more likely that Jon Leicester, acquired from the Chicago Cubs in a minor deal over the winter, won't make the Texas roster and will have to be exposed to waivers.

Would it be possible for us to pick him up and trade him again? Maybe for somebody good this time.

Could easily pick him up, but I don't see trading him for someone good being a possibility.
