This is interesting. I didn't realize that ND ever really had a shot at Mustain. I'll trade him for Jimmy Clausen, though.

Oh yeah... that's why he opened up his recruiting after originally committing to Arkansas. He was basically begging for an official visit and an offer from ND. When he saw that it wasn't going to happen because ND already had 2 commits at QB, he recommitted to Arkansas.

That's a shame that Weis has a lot of respect for Lemming... most other people do not

I'm sure he doesn't, he just doesn't want to be rude. Why hurt the feelings of his best recruiter

Sports Pickle discusses Miami's class...

The University of Miami’s football program hauled in an impressive recruiting class today on National Letter of Intent Signing Day, including a record six recruits who were able to sign their own name without the help of a third party.

Entertaining SI piece on some huge high school stars turned recruiting busts. I'm not sure who the biggest bust is... maybe Ronald Curry since he was supposed to be incredible at football and basketball, and wasn't really that hot at either one. I remember the hype around Kendra was huge too, and he did next to nothing.

Not a big surprise... they were a program sliding down a hill before Weis got there. Even last year when he was hired, they couldn't do much to bring in a good recruiting class. One, he was hired late, and two, he was getting ready for the Super Bowl. He couldn't put all his energy into bringing in big time recruits with his present employer needing him for what was a fairly important game.

Still, it's no surprise that ND and PSU have big time recruiting classes this year. They are two of the big-name schools in college football. While they slumped in recent years, they still have their own respective mystiques, and for young kids who grew up interested in football, it is hard to turn away from a prestigious program that is gathering a lot of steam.

An article I read in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said Illinois' receiver recruits are the 3rd best class in the nation behind USC and Auburn. Where exactly did that come from? Zook is getting it done.

yes he is

Zook always gets it done come signing day.

It's game days that he struggles with.

Average recruiting class for Northwestern. I expected more after the past few seasons, but it became pretty obvious early that this wasn't going to be a real good year. Regardless, there are some good players in there. Mauro is going to compete for the QB spot after playing his senior season in a spread offense and there are some pretty good skill players, as well. Could have used more help on both sides of the line, but Walker is holding two scholarships for players returning to the team after being kicked off. Plus, if the two top recruits from last year who were injured stay healthy through the summer, that will be a big boost for the lines.

We did lose OC Dunbar to Cal, though, where he'll become their new OC. I wasn't a huge fan of his, but it'll make things a little more interesting.

What could Zook possibly be selling these recruits? They got beat by at least three scores in all their losses, including every single conference game. U of I isn't exactly a bastion of football tradition either.

WE BEAT RUTGERS!!!

I wish Karl Dorrell was so embarassed by his recruiting after a 10-2 season that he'd quit in shame.

At least he's figured out how important the OL and DL is. Christian Ramirez could be a sleeper if they stick him at RB, WR Terence Austin was a good pickup.

PSU at #9 on the recruiting class list. I'll take it. It's nice when paired with the fact that zero PSU players were drafted to the NFL last year and we know we'll see several this April

EDIT: ESPN's crawl said #9, but the paper today said 6 or 7 depending on who you ask.

Just for Truffle, mini-bios of all of PSU's recruits (just click on each name)

An added note:

Vidal Hazelton, a wide receiver from Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., sent a letter of intent to Southern California on Wednesday, but without the consent of his parents, making the letter void. Hazelton, who had narrowed his final two choice to the Trojans and Nittany Lions, has until April 1 to sign.

Red Grange and Dick Butkus. Not to shabby.

so? does that mean he shouldn't be able to recruit anyone good ever? i mean, how is illinois going to improve if they don't get the recruits?

i could ask you why weber didn't get scheyer, wright, rush, or collins after sending a team to the championship game, in which they narrowly lost--not to mention turning deron williams into a top 3 draft pick and sending luther head to the rockets in the first round as well.

i think you just hate the illini for whatever reason. maybe it's their recent dominance over MSU, maybe it's their perrenial dominance over mizzou, i don't know.

I still think Weis did a decent job last year, considering the obstacles he had. Plus he made a great decision, IMO, by not just getting anybody and only taking 15 players. As a result this year and next year will be huge classes, and Weis will have a full year to recruit them.

As to ND's total ranking, they took a 2 star kicker, which caused their ranking to slide down a few spots. However, Weis must have seen something in him (he said his kicks had pop), since he said he will be competing to start next year.

Overall I am very, very happy with what Weis was able to do this year. Just goes to show how when Ty was whining about how hard it was to recruit at ND, all he really had to do was get off the golf course, and make an effort (plus maybe win a few super bowls ). Now its time to go after Clausen!

A few observations:

-For unknown reasons, there arre 249 players in the rivals 250.

-The SEC signed nearly 32% of them.

-Notre Dame signed two more than the entire Big East.

-UM, PSU, and OSU signed 34, while the rest of the Big Ten signed only four.

-The non-BCS schools didn't sign any.

-Among major programs, the worst showings were Nebraska (1), and Tennessee (3), and Miami (7)

-Some of the better showings among the non-powerhouses were Clemson and California with seven each, and Oklahoma State and Pittsburgh with five each.

-Of those that didn't sign any of the rivals 250, the ones that stick out are Oregon, Wisconsin, Purdue, Michigan State, Colorado, and West Virginia.

I disagree that he must hate the Illini. I was asking myself the same questions. Zook must be a great recruiter to get anyone of note to come to Illinois. At this point, they are one of the worst programs the Big Ten and nationally speaking are an afterthought. Zook is doing a fantastic recruiting job and I wonder what he is saying to these guys to keep them from going to competitive schools with better tradition.

Who had the number one class 3 and 4 years ago?

Scout:

2004: USC (the top recruits were Fred Davis, Dwayne Jarrett and Keith Rivers)

2003: USC (including Reggie Bush and LenDale White who were only 4-star prospects; the top recruits were QB JD Booty and WR Whitney Lewis who has been a big bust)

2002: Texas (the top recruits were Vince Young and Justin Blalock)

Rivals:

2004: USC

2003: LSU (the biggest recruits were RBs Justin Vincent and Alley Broussard, WRs Dwayne Bowe and Craig Davis and QB JaMarcus Russell)

2002: Texas

Thanks Raisin and those are the last top 1 teams in the country.

I just saw a stat that said since 2002, out of the top 10 recruiting classes for those 3 years, only 3 finished in the top 10 this year.

Calm down. I don't think it's illogical to wonder why the worst team in the Big 10, who got beat soundly in all their losses, that isn't traditionally a strong football school got around a top 25 ranked class.

It has nothing to do with Basketball, but since you brought it up, it's not like Weber lost those guys to Bradley and IUPUI, or that he ended up with a terrible class. It's a terrible analogy, even more so when you consider the different dynamics of building a football v. basketball roster.
