Jones got a lot more RBI opportunities than Lee. Maybe Hendry is willing to overpay for a proven leadoff man so he can Dusty-proof the lineup and keep Derrek happy.

Andruw Jones:

AB w/ runners on: 297

AB w/ RISP: 184

Derrek Lee:

AB w/ runners on: 236

AB w/ RISP: 124

Lee wasn't going to win this award. The MVP isn't the best player award and this is a known element.

Jones did deserve to be 2nd, possibly 1st because this award doesn't go the highest statted player. It goes to player that drives his team to success.

Jones was more important to his team than Lee to the Cubs. Jones was arguably more important to his team than Pujols.

Go ahead and make that argument for me, if you don't mind. I'm DYING to hear it.

Like pretty much everyone else here, I can accept Pujols winning it, cause him and Lee were really close, but it is kinda funny that the silver slugger and gold glover at 1st base finished as the 2nd highest 1st baseman in the voting.

Cause I guess the MVP is supposed to go to the guy who had a good year for a team that won its division by the smallest margin.

Stupid Cardinals won their division by too much that Pujols wasn't valuable enough. Value only counts when your teammates are either good enough to put you in contention, or bad enough to keep you from running away with it.

Unfortunately for Lee and Pujols, Lee's teammates didn't realize they were supposed to be good this year. and Pujols's teammates didn't realize they were supposed to be bad.

To re-cap, the only teams that had players that could be considered the most valuable in the league were the Braves, Astros, and Phillies. The other 13/16 of the league weren't even close.

BRIAN GILES 4 MVP!

This is a shame. Andruw Jones? That's a laugher. Derrek Lee? His team sucks. ALbert Pujols, his team is too good. Brian Giles? His team is just right.

In all seriousness, at least Pujols won. He's at least an extremely close second to Derrek Lee.

Blah.

I'm bummed DLee didn't win. TBS, I'm not too upset with Pujols winning. He's a stud, and deserves to be.

But I'm jumping on the Andrew Jones "you've got to be kidding me that he got 17 first place votes" bandwagon. What a freaking joke!

The irony is annoyingly stupid.

Face it, the Cubs would have been out of the race for the NL Central in April without Lee. He would have won this friggin' thing if the Cubs didn't have such a shoddy manager.

My argument all season, the "Goldilocks theory". Most Braves fans are livid because they are positive they wouldn't have won without Jones and we would have had no problem without Pujols. One, I don't vote on should've/would've/could'ves, two, take a look at win shares before you make that argument.

More fodder for the "Jones had to carry his team" theorists:

Here is Atlanta's AVG/OBP/SLG without Andruw Jones: .265/ .331/ .418

Here is St. Louis' AVG/OBP/SLG without Pujols: .263/ .327/ .401

I disagree with Pujols winning it over Lee, but not much angst over it, but Lee was the most productive player.

The question.. who was the most valuable player in MLB? Ortiz, A-Rod, Pujols, Lee, or Jones?

that's right, .308 OBP. yes. We need better defense.

You are way too impressed by that silly RBI title. Jones' 128 RBI is another fine example of the heavy dependence of RBI numbers on opportunities. Jones didn't even do a very good job with the opportunities he did get, he just got so damn many that it didn't matter.

Andruw Jones:

AB w/ runners on: 297, .236 BA, 19 HR

AB w/ RISP: 184, .207 BA

Derrek Lee:

AB w/ runners on: 236, .309 BA, 15 HR

AB w/ RISP: 124, .331 BA

Albert Pujols:

AB w/ runners on: 272, .313 BA, 20 HR

AB w/ RISP: 140, .329 BA

Such a stud...

In a sport full of men who zigzag from hot streak to cold streak, Pujols is the single most dependable offensive force on the planet.

He batted .300 in every month but one (dipping to .287 in August), reached base 40 percent of the time in every month but one (slipping to .396 in April), and slugged .500 or better in every month, period.

These awards will always be lame until the voters understand stats better. Jones getting all those 1st place votes based on RBI was just stupid, and giving out Cy Youngs based on W-L is an absolute embarrassment to the sport

Like Andy Dolan said at Desipio today:

Lee wins the Silver Slugger award for being the best hitting 1B in the NL. Lee wins the Gold Glove award for being the best fielding 1B in the NL. Yet another NL first baseman wins the MVP award. Its a freakin sham.
