You'll recall a week ago he rejected the 3 years and $21M offer. According to this link, he also rejected the latest 3 years and $25.5M offer.

Leaving the Yankees out of the conversation for a second, it looks like the Mariners, Cardinals and Red Sox seem to be converging down to that 3 years and $28-30M range we all talked about several weeks ago.

Barring a miracle, it looks like Giles will indeed hit the open market at 12:01 AM.

Whats sickening is not ONLY will the Cubs not sign him, but they will sit there and let the Cardinals take him. I would be willing to go a little more agressively at Giles, just to either A) Drive the price up or B) To take him away from the Cardinals.

If they get Giles, your gonna have a hard time getting above third place in the Central for the next 2-3 years.

If he's gonna look for like 3/$36, hendry is making a foolish move in not going after him. That's way lower in years and dollars than any of us thought here. Edited by USSoccer

Based on the reports so far, it might be even lower than that.. like ~3/$30M.

Please, Jim...

I really do think 3/30mil or at the very most 3/33m will get him.

I don't think Giles will sign quickly. There will be enough suitors for him to take his time and weigh the offers. That could work in the Cubs favor.

We know the Cubs first priority is Furcal. If Giles is still around after Furcal signs, then I can see the Cubs becoming players in this. They will know exactly how much they have left to spend and where it will need to be allocated.

My guess is Giles won't sign anywhere until the Yankees-Matsui mess is worked out. Even if he has no intention of going to New York, his agent will likely see the value of using those Yankee dollars to get his client a better deal elsewhere. Giles also likely will want to see if the Braves re-sign Furcal. If they do not, the Braves might have the cash to unite him with his brother in Atlanta.

My guess is Giles will not sign before December 15.

If he goes to the Cards for less than $10M. I will hurt someone. 2.5M for a middle IF bench player, on a team with several middle IFs (I'm including Furcal too), but won't go $10M for a game-changing RF, on a team with 1 unproven OF and that's it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the calendar turns to 2006 before Giles has a team for next season. The longer he waits, the better our chances become IMO.

As long as the contract stays in the three year/$10 mill/year range Hendry has to be a player. If not, well then I've lost whatever little faith I have left in him. Edited by CubinNY

Looks like BbB was right about SD lowballing the hometown guys.

Hmm....

Pierre

Furcal

Lee

ARam

Giles

Barrett

Murton

Perez/Cedeno

How's that sound Hoops?

What's not to like about it Cuse? I think every GM looking at Pierre believes he can rebound from his below average 2005 season. I personally like Wilkerson better because I think he has a better arm, and more power, but I'd take Pierre over Corey Patterson. I'd probably bat Giles clean-up, in between DLee and ARam. I might also flip flop Barrett and Murton.

I've been in San Diego for about 10 years and I've come to understand the way they do things here. Not well!

Ramon Hernandez is leaving and Giles is waiting at the terminal for his ride out as well. The player the Padres seem the most interested in is Kenji Jojima. That's all well and good, but I'd be really nervous having a catcher who can't communicate with the pitching staff.

It also seems as though they are going to court Jacque Jones. To put this into perspective, here is what this team might look like next year:

Dave Roberts

Mark Loretta

Ryan Klesko

Jacque Jones

X Nady

Vinny Castilla

Khalil Greene

Kenji Jojima/Miguel Olivo

Peavy, Eaton, Park, Williams, Wells?

Trevor Hoffman emptied his locker when the Padres lowballed him as well.

John Moores is spending all the money he is making off the Padres baseball team on developing condominiums and shopping around the stadium rather than on improving the team. They were 6th in attendance with extremely healthy ticket prices last year.

I predicted about a month ago that Giles would land in one of these three teams for 2006:

Braves (to be with his brother AND a perennial division winner)

Cardinals (in a position to continue dominating)

Cubs (mostly because of money)

I think his desire is to be on a winning team. I also think he would prefer to stay in the NL. The NL Central is closer to his roots, but his brother is in Atlanta. I don't think there is any chance he goes to the Yankees. At least I would hope not. But, then again, it would certainly be better if he went to the Yankees than the Cardinals.

I'm feeling less than spectacular about the chances of going to the Cubs, since the Cubs don't seem to be all that enthused about him. How unfortunate.

Too much of Giles' production is tied to his ability to draw lots and lots of walks. Hendry won't pay big $$ for a bunch of walks, it's not his style.

At least the ballpark/gaslamp district will be really nice. I'll have to visit SD more often. :)

Dealing with that group of players, I'd go with Giles in front of Lee and slide everyone down. No reason to put that sick OBP BEHIND our thunder.

Good points B, but with regard to the Cubs' interest: is it possible that Hendry is trying to not tip his hand (or rather, what he wants his hand to be)? I mean, if we went all gung-ho about how we wanted him, wouldn't he have even more bargaining power than he already has? I'm not terribly optimistic about us landing him, but from what I've read, that's something that Beane does.

it seems possible, but if we're going to come up with baseless hypothetical scenarios, they might as well be a happy ones, right? :D

Well, I mean, I don't want to automatically lose all faith in Hendry because of what appears to be (or is) a poor signing with Perez.

I'm trying my best here
