I'm just south of Denver so its about 50 minutes to Colorado Springs. Just think of Soler had been healthy all year - Iowa could have had a potential 1-4 of Alcantara, Baez, Bryant and Soler. Nice! In a league where you can't spend big on amateur talent anymore, using your excess cash for "free access" to quality veterans may be the best option. Goony is dead on with this, imo. Controlled veterans are really the only way to stockpile young talent quickly. The downside for many teams is it takes available cash to get controlled veterans. The good news for us is we aren't one of those teams. If Lee takes major prospects to reel in, obviously he's off the table. But I love the idea for picking up quality vets that are largely salary dumps.

Who can you make such a guarantee?

I've heard this notion a few times but I can't imagine Hoyer not trying to pick up some reasonably priced free agents with 2+ years of control in the off season. It's the easiest/only way to turn $ (which they have a ton of laying around) into long term assets. If they pick up Edwin Jackson and Kyle Lohse in the offseason, they may find themselves near contention with some surprise performances. If not they Maholm them into long term assets at the deadline.
