I'm excited but also very concerned about giving up 2 firsts when the team is already strapped of flexibility to add even before Caleb's future extension.

That said, we're going for it and that's exciting

Holy horsefeathers

Let’s go. We have an elite DT for the next five years. Those firsts will be late 20s/early 30s and there’s plenty of contracts they can get out of after this year to make the cap stuff work—Grady, Dayo, Sweat, Kmet, JJ.

Simmons, Kyler, Coby, Thieneman, Bush, Malik, Booker is a good foundation for the defense the next couple of years. Need to figure out how to improve CB in the offseason, but that’s doable.

See my post right below yours, but there’s lots of cap flexibility after this season.

He's way better than anything we were going to get in the draft. It's immediate elite impact. Too bad Poles biffed the comp picks in 2025, those would be handy. Still gotta make a couple more moves.

It was 2 firsts and Kenny Clark for Micah Parsons. Parsons is better but Simmons might be the best defensive tackle in the league.

If you’re gonna trade away two firsts it helps to have a franchise qb in house

Yeah this is the difference between this deal and the Mack deal. That was made on the hope that the Trubisky/Nagy pairing would be a thing. This time we know that Caleb/Ben can be relied upon to produce an upper echelon offense.

Yeah I think the two most important things in this trade are not the firsts, but Caleb and Ben.

That's the difference between the Mack trade and this one.

Lets GO!

But aren't they going to be strapped paying Simmons and Caleb's extension?  I know the cap is just a theory we shouldn't have to cut any fundamental pieces of the team to stay under the cap with restructures, etc, but in terms of adding talent, its going to be harder to fill holes without first round picks the next 2 years and say what you want about Poles' drafting but he's largely hit on his 1sts.  I guess with the foundational pieces in place, you can often find relatively cheap veteran talent to fill additional holes.

Anyways, it was just initial sticker shock.  Can't be stressed enough how good Simmons is and how much of an improvement he is over the sad sacks playing DT for the Bears this year.  He transforms the defense.

Simmons is unbelievable, but I hate giving up two firsts. I like going for it though!

They can move on from Simmons after 2028 with $8 million dead cap if they so choose. I understand where you’re coming from. They won’t have first round draft capital to replace his production. But whatever. Worst case (not really; worst case is he blows his knee out on Monday); we enjoy an above average defense for 2.5 years and then go back to being where we are today (great O, bad D). Everyone points to the Rams as this cautionary tale but they’ve averaged 10 wins over the last 9 seasons with a Super Bowl win and another SB appearance. There’s always money in the banana stand.

That's a damn high price, but they got an elite talent. My only concern now is that there's no powder left to address CB so we're just going to have to hope Jaylon stops sucking and that Roush can get up to pace quickly.

Yeah with the way GMs build teams, you typically overload on one side of the ball.  If you have an elite unit, and an above average one, you are in great shape.  If they can either add a DB or still add someone like Mack, they are going to be a firmly above average defense.  If Bryant can somehow come back very late in the year and be effective?  Look out. (though not holding my breath on that)
