Of course he would take it.  Let's not play the "call Shota's bluff" game again.  Happ is not worth the QO.

Here are the free agent outfielders (without club options) listed on mlb.com:

  • Arozarena: 31 yo, 143 wRC, 3.8 fWAR
  • Springer: 37 yo, 103 wRC, 0.7 fWAR
  • Adolis Garcia: 33 yo, 63 wRC, 0.0 fWAR
  • Grisham: 29 yo, 104 wRC, 1.0 fWAR
  • Castellanos: 34 yo, 51 wRC, -0.9 fWAR
  • Happ: 32 yo, 111 wRC, 2.5 fWAR
  • Suzuki: 32 yo, 134 wRC, 3.7 fWAR
  • Varsho: 31 yo, 87 wRC, 1.2 fWAR
  • Marte: just got released
  • Mullins: 31 yo, 78 wRC, 1.1 fWAR
  • Taylor Ward: 32 yo, 106 wRC, 1.3 fWAR
  • Laureano: 31 yo, 86 wRC, 0.2 fWAR
  • Lane Thomas: 30 yo, 101 wRC, 0.8 fWAR
  • Refsnyder: just got released
  • JJ Bleday: 28 yo, 111 wRC, 1.5 fWAR
  • Austin Hays: 30 yo, 67 wRC, -0.4 fWAR

Do we really think the third best outfield free agent is going to take a QO?

There is no circle of trust anymore. Bullpen of Dooooooom

to be fair(?), Thornton was never in the circle of trust, unless someone made a terrible mistake. it was the 6th inning against 8-9-1 of a bad lineup. Thornton just sucks.

Knowing Hoyer, he'll offer him a 2 year deal to stay with another full NTC 🙄

Well, I'm not opposed to a 2 year deal either at a slightly more reasonable AAV.  But I would think a 2 year deal is about the worst thing for Happ himself.  He either takes a longer term (3+) year deal, or a 1 year deal to hopefully lead into one last longer term deal.

He has an NTC as a 10-5 player

assuming it's not like, $80m....that would be fine? again, who should we put there next year. pretty sure he's a year away from getting 10 and 5 rights anyways

I've seen some speculate that's a procedural move, probably to remove him from the 40 man

What does this mean?  They plan on bringing him back if he clears waivers?

Happ would likely take the QO, and it would be an overpay, but unless there's a young corner OF they can get through trade, the FA OF class is bleak and none of their internal options are any better, unless you sincerely think a Shaw/Ramirez/Alcantara grouping can get it done.

It's frankly the best outcome.  Let Happ come back for a year, and then hopefully by 2028 someone like Kepley or Hartshorn can take over full-time duties.

Problem will be in my mind, is if they bring him back on a 2-3 years deal, and bring Suzuki back , now Hoyer will probably be looking to trade the outfielders that are blocked
