As they should be. They are also shopping Neto and the Red Sox are looking for a SS. Franklin Arias (SS Top 10 overall prospect) seems to be the center piece that would go back. One would think that would impact what they ask from us if it happens. e.g. asking for Rojas would be redundant. A lot of pieces to the puzzle and they can wait to see which teams budge.

Rojas is probably a 3B long term (and has been playing there primarily lately) so I wouldn't rule him out of an Angels trade even if they manage to pull off that deal with the Red Sox.

Today, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com echoes that reporting with a piece of his own. Kramer says the M’s don’t intend to move Gilbert, Woo, Kirby or Miller but are listening on Luis Castillo and Hancock. He adds that they would eat some of Castillo’s contract if it helps them get a “legitimate” return.

Is there any interest in getting both Castillo and Hancock if they M's kick in money for Castillo? He's been consistently decent for years but the numbers don't look great this season.

More Detmers smoke -

Dorsey's legit.  Doesn't do a ton of rumors so when he does my ears perk up

Wait, are you saying that the asking price for a 3 fWAR SS with 3 years of control, with a +30% K rate and a .307 xwOBA, is the #2 prospect in all of baseball (plus more)?

Yes? (Not sure about the plus more part and/or who else would be involved from the Angels)

Got it. It's hard for me to believe Zach Neto is worth that kind of haul, but also putting my hand up and saying that I haven't really thought about the non-Trout Angels at all until recently, and even then it was just pitching.

He's a good bat. Injuries kept him from being a 30/30 guy last year. Should push 30/25 this season.

He is pretty good. 5+ WAR his last 2 years and trending to be 4+ again this year. 3 more years of control is going to cost a lot.

Baseballreference v fangraphs might be part of my disconnect then. FG has 3.6 in 2024, 3.1 in 2025, and 2.0 thus far this year (projected for another 1.2).

Seems the rumors have started to pick up  . Next week should be fun

I doubt anything is that close to impact anything, but Detmers is scheduled to pitch tomorrow night

The M's would have to kick in a boatload of money.

Sandy Alcantara has an ERA+ of 101. He's the definition of "meh".

That said, "meh" is better than Taillon/Peterson/Rea

These suggested trade packages for Detmers are just crazy in my eyes.

Ramirez+Wiggins+Kepley. If it's Shaw instead of Ramirez I'm at least entertaining the idea.

Off topic thought, but Bregman is an August/September hitter.  He may yet come around.

Looking good tonight

Szymborski at Fangraphs isn't necessarily an insider but has a good sense of relative values and has the Cubs getting Alcantara for Kepley, Reid, and McGwire. I'd prefer a 2 hitter/1 pitcher package over this, but generally this would be more than fine.

Feels like an underpay. I’d do this in a heartbeat but I think I’m lower on kepley than others are

Kepley is one of those guys where everything has to go right for him to be an everyday ML starter.  There have been a few Steve Kwan comps thrown around with Kepley, but I think that's more like his 98th percentile outcome than a likely outcome (if that makes sense).

Don't get me wrong, I think Kepley has an ML future, since his speed, defense, and lefty bat should make him an attractive bench guy at the very least.  But he's going to have his work cut out for him at the plate as he ascends through the minors and faces more advanced pitching.

I love Kepley but if that was the deal it would be done already.

Jeff Passan posted a podcast about the TDL. It wasn't super insightful, more discussion than news. But a few things I caught on it:
1. He thinks Emerson Hancock will be traded.
2. Talked about Detmers and the Angels needing to sell and start over.
3. Mentioned that the industry thought Skubal would be dealt in the offseason, and now it's a lot of fog on whether he'll be traded
4. Executive told Passan they may keep Skubal and trade Mize.
5. Doesn't think Joe Ryan will be traded.
6. Mentioned he didn't think the Cubs and the Mets were a matchup for Peralta. Doesn't see it. "Things would have to change". But did suggest the Brewers there.
7. Royals are telling teams they won't be trading Wacha and Lugo. Passan finds that curious.
8. Thinks Mets should deal Weaver.
9. Believes Marlins are "listening" on Alcantara, did mention the return wouldn't be massive.
10. Jays are talking with teams on Varsho and Guasmann. Possibly Tyler Rogers. Anticipates Guasmann to be dealt.
11. No traction on Holmes extension. Thinks the Mets will make more than 5 trades. Expects Holmes to go "guarantee it". Mentioned the Cubs as a possibility.

Question that has begun rattling around in my head: how much less does a Alcantara + Peralta combo cost compared to Detmers?

I'd presume it'd be in the vicinity but with a much less painful headliner?  And I'd much much rather have the two guys for the rest of this season.

I wonder if the Yankees would be open to dealing Elmer Rodriguez. They need hitting bad.. seems like he hasn’t played great in his time in the majors but it’s early, he’s young, and he’s controllable

I don't follow the league as closely as I used to. Given the likely prospects involved and the need, my top target would be Gausman. Then I'd try to get a closer.

They should not blow out the farm, and I think we may value the Cubs prospects more than other teams. I don't think Wiggins is all that attractive, or at least he wouldn't be for me. Then the top of the list is a bunch of quantity over quality besides Hartshorn.

It's going to be an interesting deadline, but I expect a lot of smoke and not much fire.
