That price tells me that Hoyer wasn't really waiting on Imai and has probably always been more focused on other options, likely Boras guys with no deadline.

This very well may have been his only offer.  Nobody willing to pay him more than 3/54?  This is about what I personally thought he was going to get.

When have the Cubs overpaid in picks and IFA money under Hoyer?

Just in terms generally wasting resources instead of spending money ? Eli Morgan and Soroka most recently. I can keep going though.

It's not the AAV. They have the AAV. Its the opt out. They can't handle another FA next year.

They can't handle another FA next year? Huh?

The Cubs traded a Christan Franklin and a lottery ticket for Soroka. They didn't overpay.

The team is currently losing:
Nico Hoerner (2b), Seiya Suzuki (RF/DH), Ian Happ (LF), Jameson Taillon (SP), Matthew Boyd (SP), Carson Kelly (C) and much of their BP.

How many more starting players do you think the team can replace in a single offseason?

You didn't include Shota.

You know Jed if this is a problem you could always sign some of these people to extensions.

And they might. But they aren't likely signing most of those players. Unless yuo're interested in Shota Imanaga for the next 5 years? Maybe 38 year old Jameson Taillon?

Well there's only 2 pitchers left who I would consider to solidly be in the top 3 of the rotation  if signed and neither has been linked to the Cubs in a long long time so back to searching for mediocrity I guess.

Those guys Jed can let go. 😂

And or don’t sign 7 different key starters to contracts that all expire in the same offseason.

To me that means they should make a stronger effort to try to win it all this year because of the upcoming potential strike and roster turnover.

I mean, I feel like Gallen is also going to want a opt out after year 1 to establish 2025 was a fluke and sign a big contract. If so, I guess that puts the Cubs out on him too.

But that's what they wanted.  "Clean books" going into 2027.  So let's not pretend now they suddenly consider that a problem.

That too. Can his contract expire that year as well so we can get someone that isn't afraid to sign free agents.

So a 3 year contact with a 1 year player opt out makes all the sense in the world then.

Well that should be an eventful off season

3/54 with a chance to get to 3/63

Actually you said 4/$64. His bonuses are strictly innings pitched. $1M for 80/90/100 innings. So if he pitched well he will make $21M next year, not $16M And he can opt out after the first year., which means he doesn’t have to take 3/$48 the next 3 years. I do not believe you said anything about that in your 4 year proposal. This is much better than what you suggested. If he is good he is in Houston 1 year. To me, that is huge for him and a deal breaker on any Cub offer.

Not if he is paid as if last year was a fluke. If he is offered 4/$88M why does he need an opt out after 1 year.
