why the horsefeathers did Jed get tucker if he was going to spend the next year with half measures?

Had to do something last offseason

Kinda like making fans happy this deadline by getting Castro that everyone wanted 🤷‍♂️

Agreed, I think the chances are slim

Turns out plain old cheap ass ownership is why they slashed $40 million from the payroll and vetoed an Alex Bregman contract and it’s not much deeper than that. Sickening.

Man to think I told all the people I thought were freaking out about not making a move earlier today to chill out and that this version of Jed was not going to ignore a gaping hole on the roster.

Man, I've been as big a defender of Jed as anyone but this is just bad.  As others have said, this tells me he's not going to get the money he needs to re-sign Tucker so he has to hang onto Caissie.  The off season I can excuse him for a little because of Tom's budget BS, but this is 100% on him and I'm not sure he recovers from this with the fans.

Initial thoughts

Good:

  • Good value in the trades they made
  • Didn't give up too much prospect capital when they're already a bit depleted
  • The pen got a pretty big jolt, Palencia/Keller/Thielbar/Rogers/Kittredge/Brasier should be nice for when consecutive game days stack up
  • Castro is as big an upgrade as they can make on the position player side, injury insurance everywhere and a matchup skeleton key

Bad:

  • Playoff starter was the far and away biggest need and they didn't get one unless they are very right about Soroka.
  • No 2026+ assets added aside from the right to pay Kittredge 9 million
  • Lost a window to capitalize on the AAA hitters without risking value depreciation

Silver lining:

  • None of the controllable SP options went anywhere
  • Of the rental SP the only one that is clearly more interesting than Soroka to me is Kelly and I'm still not super jazzed about him, so the prices may have been unreasonable
  • Reasons to believe Soroka can be a Boyd-type of hit

there is no other version of jed. he's basically assured that they'll win the 85 games they set out to. ownership is happy and jed gets his extension.

If not for Jed somehow getting an extension I'm with you just so we can get rid of his incompetence.

It can Happen if Reds gets hot now and the Brewers continue to roll 🤷‍♂️

Feels almost as if Jed wants a Caissie/Alcantara platoon next year on cheap deals.  This was the moment to trade Alcantara.

Exactly, I'm certain we'll hear several attempts at rationalization by Jed.

Can’t wait for Jed to be on the next Cubs broadcast and see Boog throw softball questions at him.

Boog: “So the team is first in the division, it’s a good plan not to mess with the roster too much?”

Jed: “Yes.”

Boog: “Javier Assad and Jameson Taillon are returning soon, it’s a good plan not to trade good prospects for a starter?”

Jed: “Yes.”

Boog: “Thank you for your time, Jed!”

SD is in, the reds will need to get hot for the Cubs to miss out

If Boyd gasses out we're effed.

Absolutely...but we shall see. All part of the game. I know people are pissed at Jed and I'm not HAPPY with him but at then end of the day it was too much of a sellers market. Juice wasn't worth the squeeze for controllable, younger TOR guys like Gore. Hell, the Nat's don't even have a bonafide front office right now. Who KNOWS how much they wanted, but my guess is...a helluva lot.

To be replaced by a different name doing the same things, really, what's the point?
