Canario is hurt and Mervis isn't a guy who anyone would be adding to help this year, so if he's going to get moved the offseason makes a lot more sense.  In either case, you're not getting much in return beyond another Cuas type project or a real low level guy, which is probably more likely with the current 40 man crunch.

Canario hurt? doesnt matter. Jed traded for an injured player out the rest of the year just yesterday , remember lol.

I was thinking more in the lines of getting them off our 40 man and onto someone else's,  like the whitesox or oaklands or the Rockies. Jed likes A and A+ suspects and these 2 should be worth flyers in the very least

Move them for what? They'll probably sign minor league contracts with some org after the season and maybe become semi-viable MLB players in 2-3 years. Their arrows are pointing way down. Both are barely above league average at their level.

And yet; we spent so many times discussing their worthiness to be in the lineup the last 2 offseasons.

I guess we're all horsefeathers for brains?

That's the case sometimes. There's been a lot of ****** bats that we hoped we had potential replacements for.

We've also gotten more data on them as well, so that certainly has a lot to do with it.

Prospects break all the time. It's why we shouldn't be 'keeping spots open' for Shaw or Caissie (or Horton in the rotation, who is kinda looking at a lost season at this point). Mervis got a couple shots, Canario has some pretty glaring issues in AAA.

Just asking this, because: why didn't jed move mervis and canario??? They realistically do not have a spot on the team. Are they now just warm bodied space fillers in case of injury for the remainder of 24?

First, both have been hurt. Mervis broke a hamate bone and Canario has been out for a bit.

Secondly, they probably don't have much value. Everyone has access to Mervis' MLB data and while Canario is interesting enough, the injuries are piling up. Both are types that, at best, you use to buy the exact kinds of players the Cubs said they had little/no-intetest in; expiring contracts of mediocre players. They'd get you more Jose Cuases. We already did that with Nate Pearson.

They'll still have some value in the winter. I'm sure they will once again be shopped. But they really don't have a ton of value at the moment.

I remember a post u made last fall or winter about 40man space becoming an issue in the future. I figured the sooner they cut bait the better

I believe someone already mentioned this, but Mervis/Canario are the kind of guys that get dealt in the offseason. No contender is immediately putting them into the line up and no seller is giving the Cubs anything that makes sense to immediately deal them. You just hope in the offseason you can use them as a 3rd piece in a bigger deal.

They don't have a lot of value already and it's unlikely to change much between now and the winter. I think we need to remember; the guys we don't really want, other teams don't really want. We don't really want Mervis or Canario because both are flawed players who probably aren't starting MLB potential if they are even MLB players. Other teams probably value them just the same. You don't get much for that.

Mervis is gonna be mashing in Japan or Korea next year.

That is probably exactly the best opportunity for merv to make some moolah. Then if all goes well, 3 years down the road he can entertain possible offers for a tryout from stateside

This, and that whole situation was a bummer from start to finish.

Kinda amusing, frank the tank had greater success than marvelous mervis lol

Canario is buried on the depth chart but he's still valuable. Mervis is either getting traded in a low-stakes change of scenery deal or he's getting released to go overseas at this point. He didn't get much of a chance but he did nothing with what he was given anyway.

Mervis was never a scouting darling and plays the position with the highest offensive bar.  Sometimes those guys break through, even if only temporarily(Schwindel, apparently Ryan Noda), but most times they don't and teams know this.

Canario was and is a guy who can have a role on a major league roster, but his progress was stunted by a catastrophic injury, and now in terms of his value he's at an all time low because he's had further nagging injuries and isn't lighting up AAA.  Most importantly though, this is his last option year so his value to the Cubs or other teams in the future goes down significantly without the ability to stash him at AAA.  Depending on the offseason I can see a path to him making the 2025 Cubs, but from now on you should think of him not too differently than you do to guys like Tauchman when they break into a roster.

I'll never forget Bryan LaHair's magical first half in 2012.

All of our one year wonders. My favorite was Rick Wilkins. Guy comes out of nowhere in 1993 to post a 144 wRC+ and 6.7 fWAR season as a catcher. He would only top an 87 wRC+ once after that(97).

We signed pitchers Lucas Luetge, Adrian Houser and Josh Staumont. All have MLB experience and are going to Iowa. Just throwing horsefeathers at the wall and seeing what sticks I suppose. All three have had success out of the pen in the bigs.

I remember the first time I saw staumont pitch he looked like the most unhittable dude ever.

Trying to get O'Hoppe was the right move. Bummer they couldn't get that over the line. I'd be surprised if some smoke with that in the winter didn't pop back up, even if just a token reference because the Cubs had previous interest.

I love the idea of going after O'Hoppe. But the Angels have just two interesting catching prospects and they're both several years away. Makes sense they wouldn't budge. I would love for them to resume talks in the offseason or target similar catchers. Do a 1A-1B with Amaya next season.
