It’s the second start of the year. Like four dudes got scheduled for surgery today. It’s fine.

Throwing another 10 pitches wouldn't make his arm fall off, plus he had an extra day off going into this game and he'll have an extra day off before his next start.

Yes. Good decisions can result in bad outcomes. Just like bad decisions can end in good outcomes. Counsell is hired to weigh the outcome chances, not be a psychic.

Going to Cuas makes sense process wise. That Cuas was completely worthless there was a Cuas issue and not a Counsell issue.

I’m not saying they should’ve left Wicks in, but it doesn’t take a psychic to predict Cuas is going to be wild.*

*This is not an anti-Counsell sentiment. It’s an anti-Cuas sentiment.

Cuas hadn't walked a hitter in 6 outings/6 IP going back to last September.

Ump immediately calling the same damn pitches he gave LA as balls for Little.

Be interested in seeing that ump scorecard thing for this game

That's fine, but then when are you going to use Cuas to begin with? It's the mid-portion of the game, you *dont* have the bases loaded, and you have a hitter who is far worst against RHP. As I said in another post, this is the *exact* situation you have Cuas for, someone who is a designed righty-killer.

We can ask a bigger question of "is Cuas the guy you want in that role?" But once you make the choice to roster Cuas...this is when you are going to use him.

This ump has been brutal, but let's all keep in mind there's probably some karma due after yesterday

Betts was the 2nd hitter of the inning and Wicks threw 16 pitches between Betts stepping to the plate and Wicks being pulled.  Freeman is a left on left matchup who was 0 for 2, and Wicks took 9 pitches to get him.  There exists a tipping point in game situation, pitch count, and opposing hitter where Wicks is no longer the best option, that tipping point was Hernandez.

Well it wasn't though.  You can certainly argue the process in making the decision was valid - but that doesn't mean ultimately it was the right decision.  Part of the reason Counsell is getting $8 million is expectation that he can make a nuanced decision.   He's certainly not going to get them all right but he can be criticized when he gets it wrong.  Anybody can pull a pitcher when they are getting pounded - Wicks was shutting down a high (the highest?) octane offense - giving him 5 more pitches to close it out rather than hoping the pitcher you are bring in is "on" today also isn't unreasonable.

He didn't get it wrong, a reliever giving up runs doesn't mean the decision was a bad one.  As Bertz said, you pay Counsell for good process, not to be a fortune teller.  Pulling Wicks was good process.

It was 1908 who said that (😉) but being confused for @Bertz isn't a bad thing. Frankly, a compliment.

I’m going to need more than 6 IP to counteract his 2023 12.1 BB%.

Would it have been horrendouser than the result. He just struckout Betts and Freeman.  Sometimes you just got let a pitcher pitch.

Also at 100 pitches his second time out. Right call to take him out. Bad results followed.

Mea culpa, same sentiment back to back! 18e6a3f03d5e089133be3cfd7ef8e0f3.png

I'm going to blame Windstream Internet in Lexington Kentucky for being real horsefeathers slow and pretend I had the thought first 🤣

But damn, we had the same thought! I just live in a sheltered world where only I could have a thought. Damn you @Bertz for thinking like a smart kinda guy.

How many guys have thrown over 100 pitches this year? Just because Cuas didn’t get the job done doesn’t mean Counsel didn’t make the right decision by pulling Wicks. Easy to complain about the decision after it doesn’t work.
