Cool video of the Bears discussing who to draft with the pick they used on Hester

Hester was of course selected with the Bears at 57 and become a HOF kick returner and added value on offense for a few years and a little bit defensively early in his career but not much.

The Bears were clearly looking for a DB there as the other players discussed were DBs: Richard Marshall, picked with the very next pick by Carolina and Ashton Youboty, picked 70th by Buffalo.  Marshall ended up having a 9 year career as a starting CB with solid stats but no Pro Bowls.  Wouldn't have been a bad pick at all.   Youboty played for 6 years but as a reserve mostly, no where near as much impact as Hester or Marshall.

I'm a little surprised there is still a debate going on during the draft. I imagine the team having a pretty clear draft board/player ranking and then a group of players they might take at each pick or range of picks. Obviously they would have to react to how the board falls and have scenarios for which position gets filled with each pick, but knowing that they are still debating three DBs here with a pick they owned the entire time - no trades for 57 - surprises me.

Sounds like NE is very interested in Maye at 3. And Arizona wants a ton to move from 4. But those 2 firsts the Vikings have will be really tempting for one of those early teams. And the Vikings will be very motivated to move and not be forced into a Sam Darnold/Michael Penix training camp competition.

As a Packers fan, I'll be thrilled if the Vikings trade up (and give up a haul) for JJ McCarthy.  I just don't see his game translating at the NFL level.

Brad Biggs did a mock with a few trades, Vikings getting Maye at 4. Bears trading back to 11 via Arizona and taking Fautanu.

I would not like this.

I'd color this slightly shocking, because you have always been pretty passionate about improving the line. But at the same time, I get it. While this team doesn't have an Aaron Donald or similar on defense, what they do have is great balance. At the same time, with the improvement of the receivers and TE's and even at RB with Sweat, one could easily make the argument that the OLine is the weakest link as a unit. Well, QB might be the weakest until we know Caleb Williams is as advertised. But, point remains that there are no standouts on this OLine.

I just believe Poles thinks more highly of Braxton Jones than the rest of the world. At the same time, this could be the last time the Bears have a top 20 pick for a long time, so where do you invest that #9 pick? It just seems like DL and WR to me. I believe Poles is lining up for a playoff push starting this year. 3 explosive receivers and two sure handed TE's will take the pressure off of the OLine.

I don't think Poles trades back unless those 3 WR's are all gone and the top DE is also gone, which is highly unlikely.

I wouldn't hate if we used the pick on the o-line but screw it I want a fantasy football team at my skill positions.  Caleb Williams, D'Andre Swift, DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze and Cole Kmet is just incredible with Roshon Johnson, Khalil Herbert and Gerald Everett as notable backups.

Can this draft just happen already. I'm tired of seeing stupid social media clickbait articles about how "The Bears are ACTUALLY targeting JJ McCarthy!!!"

Caleb is almost a guarantee at this point. What's going to happen at 9 is where about 10 different things could happen.

I hear you, this waiting for 2+ months after the SB to conduct the draft is nonsense.

I saw an interview today with Poles where he mentioned that Caleb Williams is his son's wallpaper on his phone and its because Poles directed him to watch Caleb Williams highlights on YouTube after he was bummed about his dad trading away Fields.  Meanwhile Caleb Williams is openly mentioning wanting to play for Chicago his entire career. It's a done deal and looking forward to just making it official.

Yeah I'm puzzled what will happen at 9. Even some crazy mocks that have the first 4 picks be QB and the Bears trade up to 5 with LAC and take Marvin JR. I know it's never going to happen but whatever

I'm sorry, but the Bears swapping picks with the Chargers has even less chance of happening than the Bears drafting JJ at 1. We already grabbed Keenan and Everett from the Chargers. They also lost Mike Williams. But the Chargers are also now going to trade the rights to MHJ to the Bears for what, future picks? Good luck with that. I wouldn't be surprised if the Chargers traded back. The Bears don't have anything to offer the Chargers to move up.

I think I'd rather dislike the most popular recent rumor of the Bears trading up for MHJ. I think he's the best WR in the class, but I don't think the gap between him and Nabers is enough to warrant giving up a 2025 2nd .

horsefeathers finally, draft week!!!  The real intrigue for the Bears is what happens 2-8, hopefully, after Caleb, there's a run on QB's leaving one of WR for them at 9.  I'd really like it to be Odunze if not, Nabers will work.

Some argue Nabers is the better prospect. At the same time, I have found it interesting that Harrison seems to be attempting to tank his value to move down in the draft. No visits, no pro days. Just hanging out at home and wanting to go anywhere other than that top teams.

I agreed that was why I was saying we are at peak silly season, Thursday can't get here soon enough

Plus the idea of moving up means that Ryan "I want to build through the draft" Poles is going to be left 1 other pick outside the top 5 (assuming the 3rd gets traded in a deal to move up).  I just don't see it.  The Bears are improving but they are still not near a point where they can walk out of a draft with just 3 players because they traded away picks to get a final piece.

If the Bears had like 7-8 picks in the draft, I could definitely see the Bears trying to move up to get MHJ, but not with 4 picks.

My guess is that it would involve one of the 2 2nds they have in 2025.

Sure but moving up from 9 to 5 is worth more than some picks for next year. They are almost certainly gonna want at least 1 additional pick this year.

Could maybe try to trade the projected worse 2nd rounder next year, and 4th rounders this year and next year for a 2nd rounder and 6th  rounder this year and use it in a deal to move up.

I don’t know if that trade even makes sense. I’m just spitballing

IMO, I could care very little about the quantity of picks in this year's draft, I rather have the quality of the prospect. So give me Caleb and say Marvin Harrison, Jr over having 5 or 6 draft picks.

You would but I'm trying to project the feasibility of a MHJ trade based on how Poles operates and I don't see it.  I also think that MHJ while the clear top WR in the draft is not the only locked in WR1 in the draft so if there's even a shot that one of the other 2 fall to them I think it would be wasting resources to move up.
