This is why I have never cared about College football. It's absurd that a major conference team can go undefeated and still have zero chance to be a national champion.

sorry, they should have thought about that before their quarterback broke his leg and players fought through adversity to rise above!

the outshined_ones simply need this rare opportunity to witness Alabama in the College Football Playoff or they won't give the TV their precious attention

Did the committee select the 4 best teams?

SP+ rankings of the CFP teams:

Michigan - 1,

Texas - 6

Alabama - 7

Washington - 11

Average ranking: 6.25

SP+ rankings of the presumed 5-8 teams:

Georgia - 2

Ohio State - 3

Oregon - 5

Florida State - 8

Average ranking: 4.5

Texas barely beat two 4 win teams but nobody talks about that. Only Alabama almost losing in a rivalry game. In the end, the ACC voted against an expanded playoff that would have started this year. And you know what they say about karma.

completely gutless cowardice from the committee, you wonder why did FSU bother to play their season and fight through adversity

is it just forgotten 3rd string QB Cardale Jones won a title

I can only offer a mild defense, Cardale Jones did have a 59-0 win on his resume when his year's CFP field was decided.

I saw last night that this is the first time the CFP field only includes 1 of the SP+ top 5.

Penn State vs. Ole Miss in Peach

Mizzou vs. Ohio State in Cotton

I had forgotten about the side effect of FSU being hosed - both PSU and Ole Miss get to play in the NY6 rather than argue over who was more impressive losing to all their good opponents

Are we ready to skip past the middle step of the mega conference duopoly and go right to the relegation model that obviously makes ncaaf most fun?

As an Illinois fan, I would love that, because then it would seem like they actually have something to compete for.  There's almost no way that they manage to be top 2 in the B1G. They would have to be as good or better than all of Mich, OSU, PSU, Washington, and Oregon in addition to all the teams below that level but still usually better than Illinois (Wisky, Iowa, UCLA, etc.)

Liberty v Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl

Petition to swap Liberty with Georgia. Let Liberty and FSU face off and give me Georgia-Oregon instead.

Really can’t wait for the 12 team playoff. I hate the fact that we get all this excitement for the conference title game and then have to wait a month for the next meaningful game.   I’ve never been a fan of watching the other bowl games even the ones Michigan played in so to me it feels like the whole season just pauses for a month until all of the sudden out of nowhere the season resumes with the biggest most important games.

imagine having playoff games next weekend

We basically just did have a weekend of playoff games. All that will mean next year is you’re changing which games matter and when they’re played.

Right....and now we have a month off before the next "round" which was kind of my point.

Next year you'll get conference championship week, then the 1st round next week, QF the week after, etc etc.

That said this complaint is purely for selfish fan entertainment reasons.  It does bother me a little bit that some teams will be playing up to 17 games now

Except conference championship week won’t matter as much next year. Like I’d probably still tune in to Wash-Ore and Georgia-Bama if I had time. But I wouldn’t make it a point to watch them anymore. For example, I didn’t watch the regular season game between Wash and Oregon. But I made a point to watch each of those two games. I also watched some of the ACC game after dinner. Won’t do that next year knowing FSU gets in no matter what.

I’m still going to watch the games because I’m a sports fan. But the season and playoff will be less interesting to me next year.

Except next year you may be watching to see if Louisville or Iowa can play their way into the 12 team playoff

Louisville won't because they're in wrong conference.  Iowa probably won't either but the BigTen team who doesn't have to put a new L on their resume probably will.

Is that supposed to be a good thing?

Louisville was #10 before losing to a middling SEC team and then again to FSU so yes they would absolutely have the opportunity to make the playoff in similar circumstances.

Also, the other conference title games (and OSU/Michigan) would still have stakes since a playoff bye is on the line.

Whether or not a team gets a bye is not close to the same stakes as whether a team is in the playoffs or not.
