Wow.  I think a lot of the criticisms of Ross were mostly dumb and overreactive but by most accounts and measures Counsell's pretty much the best going right now.  Pretty ballsy move, right on

I’m stunned that they would give Ross the Rick Renteria treatment. I also can’t recall a piece of sports news that’s ever blindsided me so much.

but mostly I’m extremely happy. I liked Ross just fine, but Counsell rules.

Happy Ross is gone but didn’t expect this. From all accounts the players loved him.

Managers of this caliber don’t always become available so I get it. Played it just like they did with Renteria/Maddon.

This is where I am, even when Renteria got dumped there was some rumblings and fan chatter about the possibility of Maddon coming.  Counsell has been on the market for weeks and interviewed multiple places and there was zero indication that this was a possibility.

I'll maintain that managers don't make an enormous difference, that Ross was fine and most criticisms of him were silly, and that a large part of the perceived gap in Ross and Counsell comes down to the bullpens they were equipped with.  But I am excited at the aggressiveness for the roster that this move would seem to foretell.  It probably also speaks to a bigger disconnect in some lineup or utilization decisions, e.g. maybe the front office really does want Morel at 3B but Ross wouldn't put him there when given any alternatives?

This is shocking.

it shouldn’t be shocking. Makes all the sense in the world. Counsell is a free agent and widely considered one of the best managers in the game.

Ross is headed into the last year of his contract after missing the playoffs 3 straight years.

You know, when Rosenthal said earlier that a team with an existing manager was hiring Counsell, the thought occurred to me, but... Wow.

I completely agree with TT that this is more exciting for what it portends for our offseason plans than for the actual managerial upgrade itself, though that also seems pretty good.

It's a Home Run hire. He's been able to get more out of less than anyone in the MLB minus Lovullo.

I'll be curious if Tommy sticks around and if they are adjustments to the lab.

Minus key FA signings, this is great.

Keep spending on elite talent.
