I have a good feeling about this game. Burnes is the type of pitcher the Cubs can handle. He's sort of the opposite of Miley.

Steele is moving into uncharted territory on his IP now. I hope Hottvey and Ross know what to look for so they don't let him pitch to failure.

The angels just put some solid players on waivers. Would be cool to get Moore

So basically, "we're out of the race so let's try to pocket a few pennies on our expiring contracts"?  Let's hope their attendance tanks accordingly.

I mentioned this in the other thread.  Can Jed convince Tom to go over the lux tax?  I'm assuming grabbing any of these players would put us over.  Of course its possible Jed himself won't want to cross that threshold as he knows it will limit their moves in future years.

But horsefeathers this is like mana from Heaven for the Cubs.  Desperate need of some solid starting pitching and a lefthanded reliever and the Angels just dangled them in front of us.  Seems too good to be true.

Are we so close to the tax that a month of any of these guys would make the difference? Seems like this would fall under the "trade deadline fund" Jed supposedly always has, and the Cubs didn't do much in the way of money at the deadline.

Someone pointed out in the other thread though that the AL teams get first crack so it seems hard to believe the Cubs will get the people they want.

Knowing the restrictions that going over the luxury tax this year will impose on the team in future seasons, is it really worth it in this case?  Yes, it would be great to have to have one or more of these guys on the roster, but how much can they actually impact the outcome of the season in 1 month?  Is this really where the Cubs want to start pushing their chips in?  I'm all for going over, but knowing the Cubs approach to the tax, I'm not sure it's the smart thing to do.

Damn I forgot how waiver claims work. Really doubt the Cubs can get what they need. Maybe some of the other contenders cheap out hopefully.

Someone said in the general baseball thread that the AL thing isn’t true anymore, just goes by reverse record. Not sure if it’s true but since it’s more beneficial towards the Cubs I’ll choose to believe that.

IIRC Candelario is basically getting his whole salary above the minimum paid by Washington, so there really hasn't been much of any dent made in July.  I'm not sure if that means they were already flush against their maximum or if they had other irons in the fire they wanted to save for that didn't come to fruition.

Yes, no longer true.

Happ 250/344/536 in the last week before that double. He’s had a couple Soriano esque runs in his career, one would be huge now, and maybe convince people he’s not a fourth outfielder or whatever.

If people believe he is a 4th outfielder there is no sense worrying about their opinion anyway.
