Don't immediately get why you'd pay IFA money to swap between similar profiles in Rodriguez and Roberson, especially with Roberson having much worse command. But they clearly think they have a plan to level up these RP so we'll have to see if they're right.  Roberson will have 3 option years once added to the 40 man while Rodriguez was down to one, so I suppose that plays into it too.

I'd guess it's not a major IFA amount.  Other thing; clearing Sampson actually gets some money off the books on the tax front.  The Cubs are seemingly very concerned about going over (it's silly, but they are), so perhaps this move is in conjunction with the next one to make sure they stick under the luxury tax.

I think they're just clearing up money and roster space. Probably a prelude to Peavy or Roberts

My buddy was at a bar last night and thinks he saw Peavy singing 'Go Cubs Go'.  Or maybe it was just a random dude and they were singing "Don't Stop Believing", one or the other.

I just looked up Alonso's numbers and I was surprised they weren't better outside of his rookie year.  He would look good in the Cubs lineup but I don't think you can go overboard here.

If he can give us his career line that would be great.

He would probably hit 20 HR a year into that short LCF area lol

I wouldn't mind seeing what Bummer could do with an actual infield defense behind him. Assuming the Sox would give him away for practically free.

That's where I am on him.  I wouldn't turn him down but I'm not dying to have him.

For this year, he had a wrist injury at the beginning of June that they were saying would take 3-4 weeks to recover. He came back in 10 days because the Mets were all hands on deck trying to win and it was apparent he shouldn't of been back and struggled. He's finally getting back to his old self. Pre (June 8th) wrist injury this season in 261 PA - 22 homers & 139 wRC+. Was on pace for a monster season.

"Wrist injury" is a massive red flag for power hitters exiting their prime

Do we not know?

it's best sometimes if you just do not respond. This is not a LaHair or a Colvin situation. He has more than 1.5 years of solid numbers at both AA and AAA. No matter how much you and your alter-ego want to put him in that box.

Some of y'all speak of Mervis as if he's a 35 year old journeyman. He barely has 1000 pro PAs. We do not know what he is yet.

Sorry he's 25 years old, regardless of performance in AAA he's nothing, especially if he doesn't immediately rake upon promotion. If prospects aren't stars by 25 they're disposable washouts.

1225 pro PAs for a post-fifth round pick who scouts don't seem to enamored with (sporadic appearances on the back of top 100 lists).   It's just not the profile of a guy you have to move around major league pieces to make room for.

He might be something.  He probably won't be.  If a job happens to open up for him, maybe he'll seize the opportunity.  That's true of a lot of guys.

He's just not a "omg we have to make room to find what we have" kind of guy.  He got a lot of attention and heat based on being there when fans were in the mood for a prospect to get hyped over, but he's just nothing special.

Fortunately it seems like some more interesting talents are starting to filter into the upper minors.

He will be playing 3rd everyday. Maybe an occasional 1b start here or there to let Madrigal start at 3rd once a week or something. They seem determined to just make Morel the everyday DH for the most part.

Morel sucks in the field except maybe middle infield so can't blame them.  Partly the Cubs fault for making him play a ton of positions and trying to make him a super utility guy, which was a terrible decision for a guy with little fielding skills to begin with.

Candelario can't really hit LHP so I could see a platoon there, some starts from Madrigal or wisdom vs LHP.
