Didn't Scherzer say Cohen told him they were going take a step back in spending this offseason and that's why he waived his no trade clause? Would be a bad look if Cohen lied to him.

It was Eppler who Scherzer spoke with. It’s already been pretty much debunked that it was a ploy to get Scherzer to accept the trade.

That above article mentioned the Cubs, Angels, Dodgers, Jays and Giants, with a possible 6th mystery team (gotta love the mystery team!). Who does everyone think team 6 could potentially be?

I think many here are underestimating the complexity of the contract likely to be given out. There are likely to be opt-outs, options, income tied to continuing to be a two way player, and many other things that it is hard to place a specific dollar value against. It isn't going to be a simple matter of team A offering $550M vs team B offering $570.

There are probably multiple iterations involved as there's give and take on various stipulations, and how that trades off against guaranteed and total potential value. Those iterations have to happen across multiple independent negotiations with different parties, all of whom are also busy with other activities.

Yeah there are probably a lot of moving parts here. I had said in another post well back in the thread that what I expect is that once Ohtani signs that we'll hear he left money on the table. Not really because he did but because when you math out these contracts with options, performance bonuses, etc, one contract may seem to have a larger number, even if it's unlikely he'd have gotten that.

It's been reported the Mets, the Mariners, the Rangers and the Red Sox are out. I could see the Yankees, just over the Padres and their silly asks for Juan Soto, jumping back in here. They'd have money and means.

If this goes like the last one, Ohtani and his people will put out the news first before they tell the club.

so id check on sources attached to his agent

He told the team first in 2017, and then told a select few reporters.

Multiple $500m offers is crazy

Cubs being one of those $500+m bids means there is nowhere for the FO to hide if they don’t sign Ohtani but try to cheap out on other FA’s. They will have already played their hand with that offer and showed the fanbase they have big money to spend.

No.

I read this morning in an Athletic article the he call the team first, and told a select few reporters immediately after.  I can't find it right now.

FULLCOUNTTOMMY is reporting today that Ohtani visited SanFran yesterday. (Sorry, I'm not savy enough to provide a link)

I don't think he's reporting anything, just that there were reports he was in SF, but this appears to be wrong.

Unfortunately I believe the FO considers this an exception. If they don’t get Ohtani I doubt they spend to what they would if they had Ohtani. They may go over the LT this year, but I don’t see them as big players for other FA this year or after this year. Ohtani is truly a unicorn.

I hope the FO can at least plug some holes if they don’t get Ohtani.

They've been listed by two separate sources the last 24 hours as highly interested in Yamamoto and as "among the favorites" to sign him. I don't necessarily think Ohtani is the only player they're willing to spend on.

I assure you the Cubs and 3 other finalists have a plan in place if he doesn’t sign with them. This is why you hear rumors of the Cubs being involved with Glassnow and Yamamoto. They won’t get moved until Ohtani signs. That’s how this works with the top guy. That’s how it always works with the top guy. Teams and agents wait because it’s in their best interest.

I didn’t mean to imply that you were specifically calling him weird and indecisive but there are certainly a lot of people that are.

We have to assume the Cubs have talked to most or all of the agents of players they're most interested in for Plan B, or to continue Plan A.

I do remember this happening in a lot of offseasons, with top guys holding things up.  Teams got their offseasons done very quickly in the lockout year, this isn't an issue, there's a ton of time left.

I get that. I am just saying we shouldn’t assume free spending and suddenly being in every big FA full stop like they are with Ohtani. I do believe they will go over the LT this year because they have $50M coming off next year. I just do not assume they will now be in on every top FA. I also see they are said to be in on Yamamoto. I am happy to see that too. I just caution those who might think this ownership is now going to become the Mets or Padres of last year. And I am not criticizing them for not being like that. I still view Ohtani as a unicorn because of all the money he can also bring ownership.
