Not that it's necessarily causal, but most of the best teams in baseball have a younger front office puppet with limited experience (or, initially, none) managing them. I'm not sure I see what can be so disastrous.

This most recent wave with Boone, Cora, etc. has been really strong in the early going. That being said, the first wave of these guys, Robin Ventura, Mike Matheny, Brad Ausmus, was kind of a disaster.

I'm mostly with you on whoever we get probably being fine, but there is some risk.

Feels like the quality of the front office is a pretty clear dividing line there.

Absolutely. I'm also sure there were some lessons learned from that first wave. Like most of those early guys had no coaching/FO experience beyond their playing careers, whereas for the new wave I think only Boone is like that.

I’m just going to go on the record and say that I think David Ross is a recipe for disaster. I’m very opposed.

That's a weirdly strong stance.

Why?

I don’t think managers can make a large positive influence, but I do believe they can make a large negative influence. Ross could work out just fine, but I do think the best manager candidate would be SLIGHTLY more strict than Joe on day to day operations of the team. Maybe I’m completely off base, but it doesn’t seem like Ross is the right guy to do that. Either he won’t at all and it will be status quo (which could very well work, I have my doubts), or if he tries to be more strict I’m not sure how his former teammates will respond.

I don’t want to overemphasize what I said above, because I think it’s admittedly a small chance that it blows up. I’d rather just not take that chance. In general, I want somebody who has previous coaching/managing experience. I get that catcher in MLB is almost a pseudo coach. I’m just very, very uncomfortable with Ross, and maybe I’m not even 100% sure why.

I was going to say, Matheny is a weird addition there, not because he wasn't a terrible manager (he was), but because even with a terrible manager, his team went to the playoffs 4 straight times and the World Series once.

I have to say, as ridiculous as the theory is, I really would love to see a situation where Lester is openly defying Ross, refusing to come out of games, and picking and choosing his starting dates. Then Bryant can go all Roger Dorn pointing out that his contract states he doesn't need to play the outfield and never has to field bunts. Rizzo shows up drunk every day and is peer pressuring Ross into drinking with him in the clubhouse and Ross goes on to have a legendary press conference where he spills the beans about being in over his head and can't stand the front office and thinks half the team sucks.

You forgot to mention the statue of Jobu in Heyward's locker.

and yet through the process waltz their way to WS victory #2

Hopefully they're patient given none of their candidates have interviewed with other teams with the exception of Girardi so they have the luxury of waiting for Hou or NYY to get eliminated.

Beltrán came out and said it’s the Mets or nothing

Can't really blame the guy. I feel like he's just putting all his balls into one basket. The Mets job seems like it's going to be a real good one if they can just stay healthy.

He might just want to stay in New York too, I think he lives there full time.

Yeah, definitely. The article i read even quoted him as saying he loves living in New York. He's a "special assistant" to the Yankees' Brian Cashman, which is funny, because previously the guy who i'm rooting for most to get the managerial job with the Cubs Joe Espada held that job. I think all three jobs has their pluses and minuses, but i think Mets have the best upside, which i think helps.

I don’t think there is even a mets fan alive that would think working for the guys who got swindled by Madoff to be the best job opening out there.

There are only 30 manager jobs and if you don't want to disrupt your family by moving from New York, then yes, the Mets job is the perfect job for you.

Excellent news on Espada, really hoping we get him. I still think it’s going to be Ross. Hopefully the Kapler interview is just to pick his brain on hard ass tactics or something, much like Girardi. Regardless I’d assume we are making a hire soon since these are probably the last two guys to come in.

Also reportedly interviewing Gabe Kapler.

I didn’t think the Cubs would consider the ability to cover up sexual assault allegations as an attribute for their next manager but then again these are the Cubs.
