On the one hand, he isn't good.

On the other hand, he's short and scrappy and best case scenario hits for a totally empty batting average that will make him the new first half Almora to the worst fans, just without defense or future potential.

My memory of Torreyes was that his best quality was his hit tool and that he was limited to 2B defensively, now Fangraphs is telling me he's been above average in limited time at 2B, SS, and 3B in MLB, while the hit tool is basically all that works in MLB(this part isn't surprising). Fine by me to have the backup SS be a high contact guy if that's what it is, now get Russell off the roster.

If he has options left is he just the Mike Freeman replacement? Or is he the replacement for Russell if he’s non-tendered or traded? He’s a cheaper option and not all that much worse than the Hechavarria’s, etc’s of the world. His fielding numbers at SS seem good enough and he has a ~.270/.320/.330 slash vs lefties and ~7% BB% and 15% K% for his career vs them (would assume that’s where most of his starts come shifting Javy to 2B and Zobrist to OF vs LHP). As the last position player on the 25 man who can play SS that’s mostly fine, I guess. He also just turned 26.

he was optioned to minors last year with yankees. at his age, with as long as he's been around, I'm guessing he doesn't have options

Roster Resource says he has one option left. That seems right from scanning his career but I never feel confident about this. Arizona Phil will be able to confirm soon enough.

Generally fits in that he’s cheap, plays the MIF, hits RH, and isn’t incompetent offensively. He was pretty useful to the 2017 Yankees. Hopefully he is only the first and lowest upside of multiple options in this mold, prefer a better defender. They could do worse so he sets a nice floor

I think that’s what this is about. In the upcoming moves, it gives the cubs the option of walking away(or at least the ability to bluff that they’ll walk away) from a variety of tables both when getting rid of Russell and when seeking someone to replace him.

Not AZ Phil, but he does have an option remaining.

If Torreyes is actually a decent SS, I really like this. If he's not, I don't really care because I question how much time he will actually spend on the roster this year. He's basically La Stella but trade some walks for some defense. If the last two spots on our bench are Torreyes and Spangenberg/Deitrich, versus La Stella and some generic backup SS, I think that's probably a small upgrade.

i used to love this guy!

but looking at his stats i can see i was wrong to do so

it may have actually been your confidence in him that led him astray

This makes me think that the Cubs were planing to non-tender Addi and then changed their mind at the last moment.

That’s the best explanation I’ve heard
