Andy McCullough said in an article today that Yu has made it clear he wants to return to the Dodgers and has been waiting for them to shed money.

I'm all too ready for some [expletive] organization to bail those horsefeathers out.

damn it. this is the first time in over a month that i've had any real doubt about the cubs getting darvish.

The problem is that "all signs point to team X" can sometimes mean the player is going to team X and sometimes means the player's agent thinks he benefits from appearing to want to go to team X. That thing about "other teams will have to *way* outbid the Cubs" sure felt like one of those.

I'm still pretty sure it's happening.

it kind of feels like the Dodgers thing might be some stale information. earlier in the offseason, Darvish made it clear he wanted to play for the Dodgers if they could clear payroll. they didn't clear payroll so, now, other teams must way outbid the Cubs for Darvish.

Matt Kemp is really the only “bad money” the Dodgers have at this point. If they could shed his contract without taking on a worse one or degrading their MLB roster, they would have already. But Kemp was the bad contract they had to take in order to get rid of the rest of their bad contracts.

But I believe McCullough on Darvish’s motivations. We’re at 6 weeks of the Cubs as the most serious bidder for Darvish’s services. If both sides wanted it, it would have happened by now.

Darvish better be careful. He’s the Twins signing Alex Cobb or Lance Lynn away from seeing the bottom drop out of his contract offers.

Yes. My understanding is that Yu Darvish has made clear he would like to return to the Dodgers, and part of the delay in his free agency is related to waiting to see if the team can move some of the money. The Dodgers have explored scenarios for moving useful but (theoretically) extraneous assets such as Yasmani Grandal, Logan Forsythe and Hyun-Jin Ryu. Given the fact that those players are still Dodgers and Darvish is still a free agent, you can guess how the market has reacted to this gambit by the front office.

Dood had a nice RATM reference thrown into his article. We need more of this.

Hahahahaha and some other horsefeathers in the Metrosex is saying Yu "clearly" wants to return to Texas. Ok nobody knows horsefeathers and Yu is probably going to sign with a KBO.

Tucked the same article the guy says Kemp stands little chance of making the opening day roster, so there goes his trade value.

Darvish is my clear preference, but if for some reason he went to LAD, I can live with bringing Jake back at a slightly lower cost than Yu, or sign Cobb at a lower cost. I would prefer not to have Monty enter the season as the 5th starter, but mostly because we'd be paper thin. But losing out on Yu wouldn't be a huge catastrophe or anything IMO.

A glass half full read of what's happening with all this might be that Yu and the Cubs are really close to putting pen to paper and Yu''s reps are trying one last time to get someone else to swoop in and blow them away with an offer.

No catastrophe because we would still be a good team, but he's the best player available and fits into our needs perfectly. I want him very much.

I am tired of the Yu pursuit. Give him a deadline and if he doesn't make a decision by then time to move onto either Arrieta or Cobb.

i really don't care how long the pursuit takes if he decides to come here. there's still over 2 weeks til pitchers and catchers report anyway.

arrieta (no thanks) and cobb probably aren't going anywhere first, either.

Oh is today the day where other teams try the Yankee playbook on this? "As can be clearly seen by Darvish(and 70 other free agents) waiting this long, he really wants to come to our team. The fact that there's been no news of any interest from the team is irrelevant, as they're working hard to clear the salary to get him, which you can see based on the fact that they [punches numbers in calculator] traded for Matt Kemp."

Who is Darvish's agent even? His one on one with Jed/Theo was just because he wanted to work on his English and not because he’s representing himself, right? Edited by Cubswin11

just sign cobb for 4/60 like we were supposed to 2 months ago

nah

Yeah, I have no interest in Cobb (or Arrieta or Lynn for that matter) anymore. Our rotation needs depth, and it would be realy nice to have another guy I feel comfortable having start a playoff game. For me, Darvish is the only guy left who checks that second box.

Cobb is depth, but he's not a guy I'd be happy to have start a playoff game. Realistically, he's Jason Hammel, a league averagish starter who can look like he's a lot more than for a stretch or two each year. There are a few nuggets of Statcast data that suggest there's something more there, but if they were all that compelling he'd have $80 million in hand already.

If we're signing a guy who I'm going to scream at Joe Maddon to get a reliever up for any time a guy gets on base, why give him multiple years? Give me the best third tier starter willing to settle for a one year deal. In the regular season, the difference between that guy and Cobb isn't going to be more than about a win, because even if you choose wrong and that guy is running a 5.50 ERA, you can trade for someone boringly competent like Brandon McCarthy to stop the bleeding. My choice for that guy is Jaime Garcia, but maybe you like Chris Tillman, or Andrew Cashner, or Jason Vargas, or Clayton Richard, etc.

Darvish is appealing because he's a legit star. The rotation's actually in decent shape though, so if we're not adding a star, I think the play mostly revolves around minimizing downside risk. Get a decent backend type and let our all world defense make them look good. Cobb and Chatwood were an either/or proposition for me this winter. Both have upside, both look like solid 3rd/4th starter types, and we needed to sign at least one guy to a multi-year deal so that we don't have to worry about turning over 40%+ of our rotation again next winter.

If by 4/60 you mean 2/30 or 3/40, sure. But just get Yu

my heart wants yu, but it kind of feels like it's back to 6/150 for him, and his recent injury history makes that pretty scary to me. i'll still be excited if they end up paying that much to get him, but i don't know if it's a smart decision.
