You vastly underestimate how often I check this forum for news then.

If you don't have an auto-refresh extension running every 10 seconds on the tab with this thread then what are you even doing?

The longer this drags out only makes the situation worse for Arietta, Cobb and Lynn, right? I mean, as we get closer to Spring Training and teams are kinda set on their payrolls, I just can’t see anyone signing for the remaining three at anything less than a deep discount. At this point I would think the first one to sign is in the best position to cash in before the market dries up. I think the teams know this too and nobody wants to be the first team to sign a guy because once Darvish goes for $100M+, Arietta will end up having to take a haircut deal or some kind of “prove-it” deal for a year to try and be the guy next year. Not that it’s any better for someone his age to try and do thus, they’re just out of options and the market just isn’t what they thought it would be. Arietta is still thinking he can get the money the Cubs offered as an extension but it’s not there anymore because the market changed. But he’ll keep waiting because someone’s gotta pay it right? Having Boras involved helps keep pragmatism out of play and further complicates the issue. This is going to get ugly.

This certainly seems like a pretty unique situation where really talented players are not being signed. The Cubs seem to be the team with the most money to spend, and knowing that, attempting to be the guy the Cubs sign seems like a nice gameplan. I suppose there is enough money sitting around this offseason for everyone to get paid, but likely not at the amount they expected. That's probably a bit of the reason the Cubs haven't already signed Darvish. He wants a 5th or 6th year, but Theo has a lot of leverage because there doesn't seem to be many teams that can compete with them in dollars or years. I think Theo would be okay with Cobb if Darvish isn't willing to come down on his asking price, which only strengthens Theo's leverage. If Cobb signs somewhere, Theo might have to be the one that blinks.

You also have teams like the Phillies with a big need for a SP and a lot of money but still on the fringe of competing. I'm sure they could offer close to asking price for Arrieta or Darvish but I could see them not wanting to go to a club that is in rebuilding mode for another year or two still.

Will this off season be looked back on as a bit of a "bubble burst" when it comes to salaries? I guess it depends on who signs for what, but the rate at which salaries have been growing over the past decade seems to have hit a wall. In past years, there is no way guys like Darvish, JD Martinez, etc. would still be unsigned. Have the players finally reached too far?

Lol, no.

The owners have unprecedented profits and yet systematically have introduced rules throughout the game that reduce pay for both big leaguers and amateurs, ask for tax payer-funded stadiums and pay minor leaguers peanuts, but it's the players who have finally reached too far?

It could have a lot to do with the disparity between the "rich" teams and the "poor" teams both in finances and ability. The "rich" teams have the most money to spend, but don't have the need to spend because of the luxury tax because they already are playoff bound. The "poor" teams have less money to spend and more holes to fill, but they know signing a $100+ million star won't put them into the playoffs.

Fair enough.

How stupid would it be if the only reason he hasn't just signed with the cubs yet is that he is waiting to meet with the twins, who apparently are the toughest people on the planet to schedule a meeting with.
