Cubs trade Eloy, Cease, others for Quintana

I said we aren't getting PRIME Jon Lester. His WAR was hovering around 6 in his prime years, which Quintana (currently at a 2 WAR) is in now

 

Look at it this way, if we were sellers...Do you think we get an as good of package for Jon Lester on the market?

The one that is better than Jose Quintana, even though he has thrown 1,000 more innings. Not really a validation of your guys' Quintana is an ace argument

 

I'm not sure there's a huge "he's an ace" argument as much as there is a "calling him a 3rd starter is kind of dumb" argument.

I love Eloy. Sucks to see him go for a not-quite superstar pitcher. But Quintana is plenty good, and DAT CONTRACT DOE! Pretty nice to have the 2 & 3 starters locked up til 2021 for about 60M combined.

Uh okay? Though it can be noted 2016 WS Lester was within 1 WAR of prime Lester, and Quintana is very close to that Lester too, even this year, a down year, no worse than a down year for Prime Lester.

I know I'm late to this, but what are you talking about? What is an ace? Is it definable? We gave up a top prospect for a player who is already as good as you would hope a top prospect will become. That player is very reasonably priced for 3 yrs.

 

I have found that Cubs fans who used to way under value good prospects are now way over valuing them...just an observation.

Per Fangraphs, in 2017, his underwhelming year, he's been the 18th best pitcher in baseball. 10th in 2016. 15th in 2015. Do you mean like, a good #3 on an All Star team?
