Does this solidify The White Sox as the top farm system and us among the worst?

The Cubs can always rebuild their system by trading Wade Davis now.

I know this is a joke, but if they happen to fall out of the race, he actually will help to rebuild it.

So Arrieta and Lackey make about $31m this year and will be off the books.

Quintana will make ~10m a year each of the next 3 years. Obviously we'd still need to fill a rotation spot but thats $21m in surplus funds for.....Harper?

Where's the other 24m?

Begging Heyward to be a good ex-teammate by opting out.

Hopefully the Cubs have the payroll flexibility to add $20+ mil by then. They own most of the rooftops and will be operating the hotel and all the other new revenue streams.

Meh trade imo. I always thought Quintana was more of a #3 on a good team and I think we paid the price of getting an ace. Would MUCH rather have Archer, who might've been available in 2 weeks. Our farm system is now in the bottom 5 in baseball. We havent had very good drafts in the past 5 years outside of the first round.

I hate the fact that I will have to watch Eloy become a star on another team in the same city. It sucks.

I think I would have traded Almora/Candelario/Cease for a different guy. Agh

The White Sox now have 9 prospects in the top 68, and 2 of the top 5, while the Cubs join the Royals as the only 2 teams without a top 100 guy.

What else do those two teams have in common? :-)

A World Series win followed by abrupt plummet to mediocrity?

And FWIW, MLB.com has Jeimer at 81, so there's that. I guess.

I'm okay with trading away Eloy + Cease. But I more like Quintana than love him.

I know the Rays are still competitive but I wonder how much more expensive Archer would have been.

Lots and lots of wrong things here.

Did you do that on purpose?

Anybody unhappy with this trade, I'll bet you that in 6 years, the cubs will have gotten more wins out of this trade than the white sox. That's like 3 extra years after Jose is probably gone.

What exactly is wrong with this opinion?

I'm a big fan of this. I like Quintana quite a bit. And I think he's a great fit. Not sure I'd even want Archer more than him, honestly. He scares the horsefeathers out of me with all of those sliders. I certainly think he's better. I'm just not sure I'm a huge fan of giving up what it would cost to get him, and then relying on him to stay healthy. Regardless, I think Quintana is worth it.

Trade all the prospects. Forever. Keep trading them. Go get me another starter, too.

Just curious- do you guys think this would have been enough to get Sale in the offseason, or did the Cubs give up less for Quintana than the Red Sox did for Sale?

- Since the start of 2014, Quintana is tied with Lester for the 6th most fWAR in MLB, between Arrieta/Price and Greinke/Bumgarner

- The Rays are currently tied for the lead in the wild card, and while there's lots of contenders to push them down, you're taking a pretty significant risk by banking on a pitcher who might not even be available(this also applies to my deadline crush Stroman)

- The Cubs notably did not give up anyone on the MLB roster or near it in this deal. If you're making trade for [Alternative you would have rather had for the cost], you're very likely getting asked about Happ/Baez/Schwarber/Russell.

- Almora/Candelario/Cease would not get you a pitcher near as good as your too low impression of what Quintana is, never mind a pitcher as good as Quintana actually is. Maybe as a rental, but as has been said this is not just a trade for today, it makes the offseason much easier and more flexible.

I've been trying to guess what else is on the Cubs shopping list for this deadline, and what deals are still possible after flipping Eloy & Cease.

Backup C? LHRP? Another starter, probably more in the Monty 2016 mold? All of the above?

The Red Sox offer was better. moncada is at worst on PT with Jimenez but a majority still have Moncada slightly higher plus he's much closer to the majors so less risk. Kopech is a higher regarded prospect than Cease and while they might have similar injury concerns Kopech is closer to majors. The other 2 guys the Cubs gave the Red Sox seem like fillers to me

Glad I can get both my mom and Ken Rosenthal's takes on the trade in one place.

Rosenthal's articles are now being posted on his facebook page because foxsports.com no longer posts articles, going 100% video, because they wanted to isolate the one thing I hate most about visiting a sports site.

Leatherface to the Brewers should net a nice return too

Quintana better be awesome because I am sad

If Quinatana is a #3 on a good team, then Jon Lester did a hell of a job willing us to a World Series championship as a #3.

If you think we just traded for prime Jon Lester you are sadly mistaken
