Did this actually happen?

Yep someone said they heard Quintana to the Cubs for 4 prospects last night on White Sox Reddit

wouldn't that be the most Theo thing to do? I wouldn't put it past him...and if it was him, that makes me love him exponentially more.

if it was then theo is a huge men's right activist and/or anti-semite

but we know neither of those are true.

This is a really good trade for both teams. I like it a lot. That contract for Quintana is so sexy. If we wanted to, we could probably trade him at the 2019 deadline and recover a lot of what we just gave up after getting 2 full years out of him. We probably won't want to, though, because he's kind of awesome.

I want Doolittle now.

Edit: christ, i love this trade so much more now that i know it was broken by katyperrysbootyhole and confirmed by wetbutt23

Then, there's Jim Hendry on here and the Facebook comments on the Cubs post about the trade today. lol.

"Why would they trade the guy who can bust out stadium lights?!"

Like, I love getting Quintana. I don't love giving up both Eloy and Cease. Wish we could have at least gotten a secondary piece.

The Cubs just got a sub-30-year-old pitcher that has averaged 5-WAR for the last three years and is making basically nothing as far as baseball contracts go, and they didn't even have to give up a major leaguer to get him. They gave up a corner outfielder that will have to OPS .850+ to even be worth 2 wins a year, as well as a pitcher that has never thrown 60 innings in a professional season.

Theo probably said yes to this trade before he could even process the idea of asking for anything else.

Wait there are actually people that don't love this deal?

I didn't love it at first sight because I've paid no attention to non-Cubs baseball for quite a while now (because the Cubs won the world series and nothing else matters). But after seeing more about him and his contract I officially love it.

And, I should make it clear that this trade is still as good for the White Sox. But just saying that there is really nothing to want more from this trade from the Cubs' perspective.

Meh trade imo. I always thought Quintana was more of a #3 on a good team and I think we paid the price of getting an ace. Would MUCH rather have Archer, who might've been available in 2 weeks. Our farm system is now in the bottom 5 in baseball. We havent had very good drafts in the past 5 years outside of the first round.

I hate the fact that I will have to watch Eloy become a star on another team in the same city. It sucks.

I think I would have traded Almora/Candelario/Cease for a different guy. Agh

The list of pitchers with a higher fWAR since 2014 than Jose Quintana:

Clayton Kershaw

Chris Sale

Max Scherzer

Corey Kluber

David Price

Jake Arrieta

Jon Lester

No. 3 pitcher my ass.

The White Sox don't even line up well with us, as far as any other pieces go. Theo certainly isn't interested in paying the price for another closer, like Robertson, who is their most available piece. They have some old corner infielders that are decent that we'd have no interest in. Maybe they'd trade Kahnle or Swarzak, but I don't know if we'd want to buy them at whatever they'd cost. The rest of their team sucks.

So instead Theo bought the one piece they have that actually interests him. And he included some 30-year-old A-ball guys hitting .150 as the third and fourth pieces.

The "other piece" is what he'll get from someone else for the prospects he retained by not dumpster diving through the White Sox roster.

I said we aren't getting PRIME Jon Lester.

Your capitalization of specific words to make a point remind me of someone but I can't quite place it

I don't know what you're doing here.

He's closer to #3 overall in MLB than "a #3."

If Quinatana is a #3 on a good team, then Jon Lester did a hell of a job willing us to a World Series championship as a #3.

If you think we just traded for prime Jon Lester you are sadly mistaken

Quintana's last three seasons matched up with Lester's career-best seasons, and he's only 28.

Trade all the prospects. Forever. Keep trading them. Go get me another starter, too.

I've been trying to guess what else is on the Cubs shopping list for this deadline, and what deals are still possible after flipping Eloy & Cease.

Backup C? LHRP? Another starter, probably more in the Monty 2016 mold? All of the above?

Still all for Gausman if you're talking about someone like Monty 2016.

this is exactly who i keep coming back to in my mind since he's been brought around here quite a bit. in a hypothetical Gausman deal, does he go to the pen or the minors for the remainder of the year?

There's a pretty good chance the Cubs just got the best pitcher to switch teams via free agency or trade or otherwise between now and trade deadline 2018. Barring a complete surprise, Darvish and Archer are the only two contenders, right? Or maybe you think Sonny Gray is on the same level as Quintana. Who else is there? Cueto? Teahran, if you trust him.

And when you take the contract into account, all qualification goes out the window.

And the Cubs didn't have to give up a player off their MLB roster. And the ~$15 million a year they save from '18-'20 because they don't have to spend that on a top-flight FA pitcher should allow them to sign free agents that will more than offset the prospects they had to give up.

I just don't see how anyone can't be thrilled with this trade.

I said we aren't getting PRIME Jon Lester. His WAR was hovering around 6 in his prime years, which Quintana (currently at a 2 WAR) is in now

Lester's four best years by fWAR:

5.6

5.3

5.0

4.8

Jose Quintana's last three seasons:

5.1

4.8

4.8

Three and half months does not outweigh four years of baseball. And over these last four years, Quintana has basically been "prime" Lester.

Once you compare medical history between Gray and Quintana it's not even close.

I kinda want to trade for Gausman and then put him in the pen permanently.
