#29: Hendricks Throws the Playoffs Most Efficient Game

 

 

Why on the list? - The Cubs had a chance to clinch their first pennant since 1945, and the best pitcher in baseball was lined up for the Dodgers. That hardly mattered to Kyle Hendricks, though, who put on one of the all time great playoff pitching performances, allowing just 3 baserunners on the night, and eliminating two of them immediately on the basepaths. The runners didn't last long though:

 

 

Toles actually hit Hendricks' first pitch for a single. The second pitch, however, went to Baez and there went the runner. Then Josh Reddick reached on a Baez error with one out in the 2nd. Hendricks let Reddick hang around long enough to see Pederson strike out looking, and then...

 

 

Then Hendricks didn't allow anything until one out in the 8th, aka WRIGLEY FAN PANIC TIME OMG FIVE OUTS TO GO WE KNOW HOW THIS ENDS. Maddon went and got him then, turning it over to Chapman, who promptly got Pederson to ground into a DP to end the inning.

#28: Russell Breaks the Tie

 

 

Why on the list? - Game 5 was a tight affair going into the 6th, as the Dodgers didn't really trust any pitcher for too long, pulling Maeda in the 4th after having given up the one run, and then just scrambling with the bullpen to try to get the game to Jansen while it was still a game. Joe Blanton was the choice for the 6th, and it turns out that didn't work out, as Russell broke the tie, and the series, on one hanging slider.

#27: Montero and Fowler Restart the Party

 

 

Why on the list? - The Dodgers had just rallied to tie game 1 in the 8th on a bases-loaded single by Adrian Gonzalez after the Cubs had basically been in control for the entirety of the game to that point. However, right away in the bottom frame, Zobrist his a clutch double (again) to start things off. After a groundout by Russell, the Dodgers intentionally walked Heyward. Then, when Baez flew out, the Dodgers intentionally walked Coghlan because they preferred Blanton pitch to Montero. Blanton threw a hanging slider on 0-1 which Montero missed, so apparently he thought that was the right out pitch to get him, so he threw another, and Montero put it about eight rows up, sending the Wrigley crowd back into party mode. Before the celebration even settled down, Fowler followed with a carbon copy HR that seemed anticlimactic in retrospect, the playoffs' quietest home run, as by then the party had already started up again.

Yeah, definitely at least top-10 for me. I'll never forget the homer or my reaction to it (running around the room shouting "MIGGY!").

He's said several times that after his hair-plug/vocal cord disaster, he decided to stop being what he thought people wanted him to be (even-keeled, never too excited) and live in the moment on these calls. Ever since he's been fantastic.

Yeah, I mean the order doesn't really matter and I totally prefer making the way through the rounds of the playoffs so that the list has a better flow, but this grand slam might even be top 2 or 3 for me. Going into that game with Lester (a cy young candidate left hander) vs the dodgers (a team that can't hit any left hander) and them not even having one of their best two starters going felt like a must win--especially with kershaw looming in game 2. Having felt in control of that game the entire time only to see it slip away was one of the low points of the playoffs. Then having montero just crush that ball... it wasn't just any old home run, it was a glorious home run derby like shot, and like others said the call was great. I think only the zobrist hit and final out of Game 7 rival the emotion swing I felt here. Plus even with the zobrist hit, the game didn't feel over so I was still really nervous. This one made the game into a party the rest of the way.

Last out of Game 4 NLDS 2015.

(She was sleeping in the 9th inning of Game 4 of the 2016 NLDS).

I was at that game. Crowd was deafening. I actually think that the entire crowd was singing "whoop there it is"

Great moment for Miggy, the team, the fans, etc. It probably lead to some of his frustration about his post season playing time knowing he can still produce, but regardless Joe made the right call favoring Willson the majority of the time.

 

Miggy said his frustration came about because Joe didn't explain his role for the post-season, which I kinda get where he's coming from, but Joe probably didn't think it was going to be an issue or he would have sat him down to talk. Sounds like it's all water under the bridge now and hopefully Miggy will understand his role going forward, he's the back up.

 

Does anyone know if Miggy is going to be Jake's "personal catcher"? That's 30 starts right there. I heard him in an interview last week express some frustration about not having caught Lester or Lackey all spring, bullpen sessions included. He's probably got a good point that he should be catching everybody even if it's in the bullpen, but with Willson getting a crash course in everything that is Lester, I'm sure it's tough to squeeze him in.
