i horsefeathering love this guy, he's so weird. that list reads like something derwood would have typed up for his Road to the show character

Derwood would have to add this:

Age 47: get a puppy

Age 55: house train puppy

Age 49: Start clothing line consisting solely of Japanese selvedge denim jorts.

http://www.espn.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/46263/in-race-for-shohei-ohtani-dont-count-the-cubs-out-just-yet

Article from Jesse Rogers. He does report that several Cubs players have been asked to keep their calendars open in case they need to fly to LA for the meeting with Ohtani

If Ohtani were to be acquired, the Cubs would have to say goodbye to an outfielder. They are mulling over trading a core player for some pitching as is; a deal with Ohtani would fast-track that, with Ian Happ, Kyle Schwarber, Albert Almora or others on the move. At that point, the Cubs could settle for the best offer instead of holding out for a top-three starter, something they are unlikely to get unless Addison Russell or Javier Baez is part of a trade. A top-three or -four pitcher won’t be needed as desperately if Ohtani is on board.

lmfao, what? no.

signing ohtani literally allows us to do the opposite of that

say hello to an infielder?

Another thing I've been thinking about with him is that we seem to have a big advantage with his living situations. If he's really that big of a homebody and just doesn't like doing things but play baseball, playing for us allows him to literally live within 3-10 blocks of the stadium (so doesn't need to drive or be driven to navigate a huge city if he doesn't want to as he could pretty much be self-contained to just Wrigleyville) which I don't think any other team can offer. He'd have to deal with driving/being driven and a larger city in almost every other case since he would have to live further away. Hell with the new apartments/condos he could literally live across the street from the stadium if he wanted. If he just wants to eat, sleep and live baseball we offer him a great (probably best) option logistically/housing wise.

I am sure there is room at the Zachary Hotel. A nice 2 bedroom suite, replete with amenities all for $100/mo. He doesn't make enough to afford a fancy condo after all.

In all seriousness, how strict are the non-cash restrictions the Cubs and others are operating under? Is the spend limit confined to cash, or are non-cash equivalents factored in as well?

I don't know, but I'm pretty sure MLB will make up the rules as they go along and aren't really prepared to handle everything that incredibly smart people in a major league front office will come up with.

If I had to guess he’s upset the Padres get the last pitch since there was that report of the respect or whatever he has for all the guys who work for them he’s played for before and he felt it would be disrespectful or hard to let those guys down by picking a different team. That’s my only guess. But Theo’s got this.

Obviously, no one knows a damn thing about what's gone on in his meetings or if there are actually favorites or not. So, looking at this from a normal sales perspective may very well be incorrect. But, its second nature for me and my initial thought is this.....

Going 3 meetings on Monday, 3 meetings on Tuesday, then leaving Wednesday JUST for the Padres, where there's a unique history already.....Gives me an impression things are weighted in their favor.

I've been in that type of spot before. I knew the other meetings were basically whack off meetings and as long as I didn't bomb, I got the business.

Again, everything's independent, very well could mean nothing, in regards to this.

So we need to call up Sabean and merge with the Giants.

i don't think there's anything more to it than there were 7 teams and they could fit 3 in per day and had one left over.

i mean, if he picks the horsefeathering padres over the cubs or dodgers, then go weirdo, i guess.

i'm too lazy to do it so anyone wanna do my thing for me and check cubs players social media accounts to see if anyone's stories had anything about traveling or being in LA?

i can't imagine what special kind of nuts you have to be to take wil myers and manuel margot over all those dudes we have who are all better, or all those dudes on the dodgers

With the Padres tomorrow (and likely either no or only a few teams to do follow up meetings/trips after) hopefully this is all over by the weekend, for better or for worse.

Heyman had an article on it that was mostly nonsense, but had a few good points.

1. Because the Padres are so terrible, they can most afford to give him a shot at being a legit two-way guy this year.

2. The Padres farm is pretty great, and they have no money on the books, so with Ohtani in the fold they actually look very promising for 2019 on. And Ohtani would be getting in on the ground floor of that.

3. He'd get to be 'THE guy.' (Though he's probably the best player on the Rangers or Mariners as well?)

I don't know if I buy those reasons as being worth choosing the Padres, but they're something.

if he really wants all those world series, he's got two options.

Grant Brisbee[/url]"]If he wants to win now and pick the best team

1. Dodgers

2. Cubs

3. literally

4. doesn’t

5. matter

6. after

7. those two

I also enjoyed this one:

If he wants a team with the most modern facilities/best ballpark

1. Giants

2. All the other ballparks are trash by comparison, especially Dodger Stadium, which is built into the side of a huge mountain that makes you walk up 30 flights of stairs to get to the upper deck from the parking lot, not that he would be going to the upper deck a lot, but seriously, it’s obnoxious, install a zip line or something

Though it’s possible that I’m biased.

If I had to choose between Otani and getting Grant Brisbee on a Cubs beat, I'd take Brisbee.
