the part about this that feels weird is that i'm not really worried about how the severity of this injury impacts the ultimate fate of this team (though we'd miss having that type of lefty bat a bit). I'm just worried about not getting to watch schwarber and having to wonder if it'd be more awesome with him.

Why I'm sad is that I have been confident that our offense would be dynamic even if we lost one player. But now I have to feel uncomfortable that it happened in the third game and ponder what might happen if we lose a second. OK, probably more like a second and third. Still.

During the game last night, Len mentioned that Baez got drilled in the head by a pitch, which could slow his return to the big league club. Anyone know anything more about that?

you basically have it.

nothing serious as a result of the pitch, but he missed some time and is gonna have to make up the missed ABs.

I'm very much with David in that I don't feel like this does *too* much for the Cubs overall chances this year, but I feel real bad for Schwarber. And, myself, because I like watching him hit majestic dong shots that send historical rivals back home.

I was hoping we were in the clear when they were checking his ankle, but confirmation that they're much more concerned with his knee... :beg:

So, in the event his knee is shredded and he's out for the year, at least we have options. Anyone think any of these combinations could eventually happen from options within (after a failed Victorino experiment, predictably)?

A. LF Soler/McKinney, 3B Bryant

B. LF Bryant, 3B Candelario

C. LF Dex, CF Almora

I will be relieved if he can return this season at all.

Basically how I've felt since last night, outside of a short burst of optimism when Len reported the sprained ankle.

Well it definitely hurts the Cubs if Soler hits like Soler last regular season, but it doesn't at all ruin their world series hopes.

Still a lot of depth even now. If for some reason one of the other 3 starting OFs got hurt, you could likely make an OF with Baez in it.

One place where this sucks a little is in trade assets for a starter at the deadline. Baez and Soler might be too important for this season now to trade. That said, the Cubs still have plenty of other assets that could easily get them what they need in July.

With Bryant, Zobrist, Soler, Baez and Szczur all able to play LF, I doubt any of A, B or C are all that likely. Unless someone else gets hurt.

Basically we need either Javy or Soler to pull their heads out of their asses and really figure out MLB if we want to be as obscenely dongerrific as we would've been. Even then, we'll still miss the full effect at AL parks and for Hammel starts.

lol sidenote - chrome was picking out dongerrific as a misspelled word and i almost clicked to figure out what i did wrong

Yep. If you told me he'd be out 3-4 months and be back healthy in July or August, I'd take it in a heartbeat.

Zobrist in left and Baez at 2nd is probably my favorite lineup without Schwarber

I'd prefer just putting Soler in LF to begin with and letting him sink or swim and if he fails go with Bryant in LF with a Baez/La Stella platoon at 3B.

If it is an ACL, does that kill him catching?

I would guess it means he's definitely not doing any more catching this year, which would be a pretty big blow to any hopes of him being a primary catcher in the future. So if you're envisioning LH Buster Posey that dream probably dies with an ACL injury, but if you're envisioning deluxe Ryan Doumit that catches ~30 games a season, I'd say that's still obtainable even with a lost catching year.
