we have the best catcher in the game right now, whom the GM despises the idea of extending

Contreras is 30. Since 2017, his first year as a full time member of the Cubs, he's third in PAs for catchers, behind Realmuto and Grandal (who both put up roughly twice as much value in that time frame, but I digress). He's been catching in the organization since 2009. I love the guy, though realistically we're talking about a guy who maxed out at 2.6 fWAR and was not Kyle Schwarber in terms of postseason awesomeness. But someone is going to give him 4-5 years, and it should not be us.

You can’t make team of replacement players. Maybe you make a bullpen out of them, but not an entire team.

So we should overpay Contreras because the rest of the team sucks?

Jed disagrees.

One would have thought they would have overpaid for at least one of the core from the WS team, but nope, can't even toss the fans a bone. Everyone's gotta go as soon as they would actually cost any kind of money because the billionaire owners are determined to self-cap their payroll at the middle of the pack at best AKA they completely horsefeathering lied their asses off as to how horsefeathers like buying up all the Wrigley property and starting their shitty TV network were going to play out.

Like, I seriously doubt anyone here thinks Contreras is going to be some kind of game changers for the team, but, horsefeathers, could they at least pretend they're not not doing anything except aiming for sneaking into the playoffs every few years while spending as little as they think they can get away with with a big market team like this?

This is a self-imposed constraint.

Contreras has only played 65% of the team's innings behind the plate and has a .414 wOBA. I don't think that's the new norm, but we've talked before about his tendency to get worn down, so I think you can at least entertain the idea that in a world with a DH and a backup catcher that isn't a complete zero, Willson's new normal is higher than he's consistently shown. And as with Happ, you have to ask if you're not gonna use the money on him, then on who? There's not a bunch of 25 year olds or great values coming in FA, and there's not a bunch of other near-FA talent they need to splash cash to keep nor are they close to a payroll crunch with other contracts on the roster.

That said, the age curve is not friendly to players in their 30s in this new norm of everyone throwing 97 with whiffle ball sliders. And unlike Happ, Contreras' pedigree and ability to play a premium position means he can get a longer deal from someone than Happ could(doubly so now that Happ is coalescing into a corner OF/LF only player). So it comes down to what Willson wants, if he wants to aim for 5 years and/or 9 figures, that's where it gets tough to see a workable resolution without him at least testing FA.

Overpay, what the horsefeathers does that mean? Fair market value for a top echelon catcher? If that’s overpaying, yes.

Robertson activated from the covid list today. To get room on the active roster, Leiter was optioned back to Iowa. To make room on the 40 man, Hermosillo was transferred from the injured list to the covid list.

Suzuki has a ridiculous 34% K rate in his last 12 games. He seems to be chasing more because they keep calling strikes out of the zone. The umps are breaking him. Edited by CubinNY

Lol remember Contreras calling him the best players he's ever played with.

Why the fudge do the Cubs have Friday off and then a two-game series with the White Sox?

I'm sure JR demanded that the Cubs games were on the weekend so they could sell out. They should have just done one of those 4 game series where they play Thursday-Sunday with 2 at Wrigley then 2 at GRate

The Friday off day thing is so dumb, I think it started either last year or the COVID year and they just kept doing it. Idk if it’s being done partially due to the lockout and lost 2 weeks this year with scheduling. But hopefully it goes away.
