It's cool that team is on the list, but going down 3 game to 1 in the World Series doesn't feel "dominant" to me

it's cool that you totally understand, after all these years on this particular board, that the relative dominance and/or quality of a baseball team can be boiled down to 4 games. it is clear that you have read and learned a lot on here and probably don't spend your time horsefeathers posting and skimming past all the discussions.

it is incredible to me that the cubs world series happened less than 4 years ago

i'm the opposite. it always feels like a season or two ago to me, even though, say, the 2017 team, feels like a long ass time ago.

also, caught myself realizing this today, but the team that turned the corner in 2015...blows my mind that was 5 years ago.

We define "dominance" differently. That's ok, you don't have to be right all the time.

I'm not sure if this has been posted, but thought it was cute. I saw it on Sheffield Ave yesterday- the Eamus Catuli sign has been updated.

WTH? We took Ed Howard because he's a very talented SS; not because he's Black lol.

Theo is very smart and dedicated to social justice movements and on the right side on these issues... I just think people are giving him way too much credit for this draft pick and reading too much into it.

He was the top ss in the draft but why did he fall to #16?

Well, a few factors are probably involved... Maybe bonus demands and wanting full slot, no spring ball or recent looks from scouts, good tools but not elite, Keith Law mentioned something about a shoulder injury or some scouts being concerned about his throwing shoulder (I think he's completely healthy now).

“Howard is sliding a bit, as clubs are worried about a shoulder issue and how it may affect his throwing and thus his ultimate position.”

Again, I think he's completely healthy now.

Howard is a very good SS prospect, but he's not in the same company as Bobby Witt Jr and CJ Abrams -- the top two SS prospects from last year's draft.

Also, it's a very talented draft class so he probably goes higher in another year.

I just noticed in Baseball Reference's 2020 season simulation, we're in dead last at 27-43 and have traded Quintana to the Rays for Kevin Kiermeier and prospect Taj Bradley. We also sign Bryant to a 4 year, $100 mil extension.

So a couple days ago on HBO I was watching this animated baseball movie called Everyone's Hero (2006)

The general plot:

Set in 1932 New York City during the Great Depression, Yankee Irving (Jake T. Austin) is a young 10 year old baseball fan whose father Stanley (Mandy Patinkin) works as a custodian at the Yankee Stadium. While the two are on the premises, a thief (disguised as a security guard) steals Babe Ruth's famous bat Darlin' (Whoopi Goldberg) to which Stanley is falsely blamed and is temporarily dismissed until Darlin' can be found. An irate Stanley foolishly accuses Yankee for stealing it, Sends him to his room and setting him up, which he would regret later on. The real thief is Lefty Maginnis (William H. Macy), a cheating pitcher for the Chicago Cubs who works for the Cubs' general manager Napoleon Cross (Robin Williams), who desires to see the Cubs defeat the New York Yankees during the 1932 World Series.

Anyways, it made me feel bad that the Cubs GM and pitcher were the bad guy in this movie.

Also, when the 1932 Yankees came to Chicago the stadium didn't even look like Wrigley Field.

Random topic of discussion but with the 1998 doc airing tonight I was reading a few things on Sosa and I came across his almost trade to the Yankees in 2000. I vaguely recall these talks but I guess I don’t remember how close it was to being completed.

The rumored trade I’ve seen was Sosa for:

Ricky Ledee

Jake Westbrook

Alfonso Soriano

Jackson Melian

Would you have taken that trade in hindsight, knowing what happened to these players? It might have altered the course of the 2003 playoff run but that’s definitely a very nice return for Sosa, who I believe was going to be a free agent after 2000 or 2001. Those 4 players (ok 3 because I’ve never heard of Melian) and saving the money from Sosa’s next contract (though who knows if they spend that money if it isn’t going to a confirmed draw like Sosa)

Cubs almost certainly still get the 2nd pick in the 2001 draft and take Prior, so we may be looking at Westbrook instead of Clement in the 2003 rotation. We get the front end of Soriano’s career instead of the back end and Ledee was a solid enough backup OF.

I dunno I’m sick of having no baseball to talk about.

I'm pretty sure Melian was a very highly regarded prospect at the time. He flamed out, but would have been a nice 4th piece at the time.

I had to look it up, but we actually did get him a couple years later. He played at West Tenn as a 22 year old and hit really well (.310/.375/.432). Then he completely flamed out at Iowa the next year and he was never the same after that.

I wanted that Sosa trade so bad. I remember listening to the Score for updates every day toward the end of July, and they kept playing “should I stay or should I go.”

The only deadline deals I wanted more were Randy Johnson in 1998 and Nomar in 2003
