Alright. I’m honestly opening this for discussion here. Why is du-rag a derogatory term? I wear du-rags all the time at work. This seems ridiculous to me, but I am open to hear why I am wrong.

Du-rag isn’t inherently derogatory. As many have noted, it’s a very common thing worn by African-American men.

It’s the way that Brenly felt compelled to point out an old great like Tom Seaver wouldn’t have ever worn one that made the comment racist. It was a pointed comment on how the game has changed, and implied not for the better.

Fwiw, I don’t think it was meant to be racist. But it was insensitive. So the sensitivity training feels appropriate here.

Yeah, I think Bob was just making a joke, but it wasn't a good one, and considering the source it felt worse than it might have coming from someone without this kind of history.

It's often not what is said, but the way it is said. He's also said that Fernando Tatis Jr would be faster if he wasn't wearing a bike chain around his neck. He's said that before about Black and Brown players. Is that racist? Well, hell yes it is. For years he implied Aramis was lazy. horsefeathers Bob Brenly.

we also mustn't let barry rozner off the hook on the aramis dog whistling.

Kaplan too. I don't specifically remember Brenly being bad with Aramis (which I'm 1000% sure is my ears not being tuned to those kind of dog whistles yet), but I remember Kaplan regularly saying things that were super yikes about Aramis and Starlin.

When Aramis was dealing with some leg injuries, he'd jog to first on routine grounders. Brenly would invariably point it out and his commentary often involved the word "lazy" or other stereotypes. It was pointed out quite a few times that he didn't call out the white players in the same way if they didn't bust it down the line.

For those questioning Aramis on why he calls for Brenly to be fired, it is not over this latest incident alone. It is the accumulation of comments over the years.

The [expletive] on Aramis for not hustling thing was something a ton of Chicago media did and it drove me horsefeathering insane not only because it didn't matter, but Aramis actually did bust it down the line a few times when he maybe shouldn't have and ended up injuring his hamstring, which is probably why he had refrained from 'hustling' in the first place.

Rozner made a big deal about Aramis owning roosters for cockfighting in the DR. I sent him an email offering to buy him a chicken sandwich with pictures of chickens packed into 3 X 12 cages ready for slaughter at a processing plant.

I think I might have posted his reply to me on here but I don't know how I would possibly find it.

Yeah. I was a teenager for most of Brenly's time here, so I'd hear things like that and think the 2007 version of "Ok Boomer" rather than getting the subtext. But I remember my oblivious ass knowing even back then that Kaplan was a big old racist.

You mean his wife’s Christian Rock career isn’t pulling millions?

Or did they divorce? I can’t keep up

They are divorced and from what I can tell via her Instagram posts, she is Woke.

And not so subtly implying in a couple of posts that their marriage fell apart at least in part because he isn't.

That's exactly why he didn't hustle. He got injured hustling and there was literally a press conference where whoever was the manager at the time told him to take it easy on routine grounders so he doesn't hurt himself, so he did and then the media called him out for being lazy. He was literally following his head coach's orders to not hurt himself, and they called him out on it. It was damned if you do damned if you don't in the eyes of the Chicago media, and it drove me nuts. Aramis was the best third baseman we ever had after Santo and it wasn't just like he was the best out of a bad bunch, he was legitimately awesome. I remember at the time he was the only third baseman in the majors to have four consecutive years with an OPS over .900. Not even a-rod was able to do that. He was also one of those players that heated up towards the end of the year but you by then the Cubs were completely out of it at that point so the media liked to think that he wasn't really trying until it didn't count which is such absolute horsefeathers.

I did t know if Machado had a similar injury situation as Ramirez, or if it’s just Machado being Machado. He certainly has a “no hustle” reputation (fair or not)

i've heard him on his score hits also hint at being pro beaning bat flippers and not liking the tim anderson stuff etc. it's not hard to read between the lines.

I’m not defending Coomer, I’m saying Machado had heard that criticism long before last weekwnd

Is Zobrist really in such dire financial straits he has to auction his World Series ring off? Damn.

I think the subtext in all this it may have gone to his ex-wife and she’s selling it. I don’t know that for sure.

For those who have bothered paying attention, anybody got a good idea of how the pitching staff shakes out next week in NY? And do the Cubs have a pitcher worth trying to time your visit for? I'm just trying to avoid a Jake start at this point.
