A heads up for those of us who get Marquee. Seeing as how this decade is basically NSBB's wheelhouse, I figured I'd pass it on.

I know this game, in particular, is a favorite around here:

Wednesday

June 29, 2007: Ramirez’s walk-off homer

In a season that had the Cubs playing under .500 often during their first 80 games, this game helped turn around the season for newly named manager Lou Piniella and his club. Piniella was brought in to replace Dusty Baker after a very poor 2006 season.

The Cubs had parted ways with long time team president Andy MacPhail after a 12-year run. John McDonough was named team president in that offseason and worked with VP of business Crane Kenney and GM Jim Hendry to sign superstar outfielder Alfonso Soriano to an eight-year, $126 million deal.

This game featured left-handed pitcher Rich Hill against rookie Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo. The North Siders were riding the waves of a six-game winning streak when the first-place Brewers came to town. Hill surrendered 5 runs in the 1st inning that included a three-run homer from Kevin Mench. After Hill left the game in the 4th, the bullpen put up 6 innings of shutout ball.

That helps set the stage for a 9th-inning come-from-behind walk-off win. Trailing 5-3 in the 9th, Francisco Cordero entered the game. He got Ryan Theriot on a pop up to the second base. Both Soriano and Mike Fontenot singled. With men on second and third, Derrek Lee hit a sac fly to deep right field.

Enter Ramirez. Down 5-4, he jumped on the first pitch and drove a breaking ball into the right-field bleachers for an improbable walk-off home run and a raucous reception by his teammates at home plate.

Fun facts of 2007

On the very day of the Ramirez walk-off, the first iPhone was first released

Of course, the most famous person in America was Apple creator Steve Jobs

The minimum wage was $5.85 per hour.

Time magazine’s person of the year was Vladimir Putin.

Monday will have the September 2001 game where Sammy waved the flag as he rounded the bases. Tuesday is the 2003 Cubs beating the Pirates to clinch the division. Thursday is Zambrano's no-no in 2008 and Friday is the 2008 division clincher against the Cardinals.

I actually remembered the bit about the iPhone being released that day.

I was in Miami on vacation with my family and didn't get to see the game, so I was just following along on a non-smart phone's "internet" updates (think it was a Motorola SLVR). Ironically, I remember thinking the iPhone was probably dumb but I also didn't know much about it.

I did end up getting one that fall when the entry level 4gb price got slashed heavily (think they were phasing it out), though.

I just received an email from my Season Ticket representative:

As a valued Season Ticket Holder, you have the option to receive a credit plus a 5% bonus or a refund for your tickets to Cubs home games originally scheduled to be played in March, April and May.

I'm sure they are hoping for people to accept the credit with a 5% bonus and then be essentially locked into Season Tickets for next year, but with all the uncertainty around the schedule this year (and possibly beyond) that would seem like an unwise choice for anyone to make.

If it’s still mostly disposable money for someone, 5% on your money isn’t the worst thing to be getting right now. Plus that credit.

People in the waiting list might want to check their spot. I was somewhere in the mid-upper 30K on the waitlist at the end of last season. I'm now 8112.

I haven't seen a drop that substantial since they sold the team and blew it all up and sucked for a couple years.

I took the bonus once I saw a report that they committed to not raising any season ticket prices for next year. We sell most of our tickets and family/friends anyways, so if for some reason we really needed the cash the rest of this calendar year, could probably just get some people to pay in advance for 2021 tickets.

If the full season eventually follows suit, I'd be looking at around $400 of bonus credit. Free playoff game at some point.

I came up for season tickets this year and passed, when I originally signed up the rough math worked to me coming up 10 or so years from now when I could maybe make something work. But it just didn’t make sense right now for me. I live ~3 hours away and could maybe get to 12-15 games a year on an optimistic outlook and couldn’t find any friends/family to go in with that would take 15-20+ games. So all you assholes who moved up can thank me for letting you move up 1 extra spot.

I calculated that credit to be 20-25 bucks in my pocket for my nights and weekends 4 way split. I was outvoted in getting my money back.

I wasn't going to take it, but I went back and read through the FAQ and it says that you can still change your mind and request your money back later, but you will just lose the 5%. So unless you need the cash immediately, I guess it is better to take the credit now and re-evaluate at the end of the year.
