Also...Buster Olney on The Dan Patrick Show today on Jake:

"When you run through [the numbers], four earned runs in the last nine weeks," Olney said. "He's hit as many home runs [since] June 21 as he's allowed (two). He right now to me is the most unhittable pitcher that I've seen since I've covered baseball. That includes Pedro Martinez. Before those games between the Red Sox and Yankees, when Pedro was pitching, there was always a sense among the Yankees of 'Okay, we'll find a way to scrape out a run or two'. It's an open question as to whether or not you can score against Arrieta right now. His last 12 starts he hasn't allowed the other team a run in nine of them. Maybe the most comparable situation that I can recall is during the '86 playoffs how Mike Scott evolved into this unbeatable force in that series against the Mets. The Mets knew that they had to win before he pitched to them again."

That touches on one of the things I like best about the way the rotation lines up for the NLDS if the Cubs win. It lets the Cubs throw a really good pitcher in Game 1 in Lester, and if they win that game then the pressure is really on the Cardinals in Game 2, because they know Arrieta at Wrigley is looming for Game 3.

I know this is premature but next Monday's high in Chicago (first division series home game) is 79 degrees.

Translation: nice weather for some donging

Days are dragging this week. This game still feels like it's an eternity away.

My Monday flew by and I was completely unproductive.

Exact same.

Guys, this is what we've asked for. A great team, that is fun as all [expletive], and that has [expletive] swag forever. Embrace it.

I just can't fathom this being the last game. It's going to be a loooooong October and offseason if we lose. Octobers when the Cubs aren't in the playoffs (so, like, every year) are super annoying because it means a full month of no Cubs games or trade rumors. When we're terrible, the break isn't AS bad because I do feel kind of icky after watching terrible baseball for six months, but it would be really hard to accept this year. I remember October 2008 and the rest of that offseason took FOREVER.

Yeah, if we get there and Lester wins Game 1, the phrase "must-win game" will be repeated ad infinitum before Game 2.

A 5:45 start time Friday for Game 1 is just the worst for me. If we win Wednesday, I am going to miss a Cubs-Cardinals playoff game.

Two things I learned today: 1) Seth Myers is a Pirates fan 2) Seth Myers actually seems like a well informed baseball fan.

1) Sucks

2) Is pretty cool at least

Saw this on Facebook, I like it better than that other one... it's got the Russell play against St. Louis a couple of weeks ago, Strop and Rondon celebrations, Starlin's celebration, etc.

Yup, he was connected to FJM somehow or another.

He was the best man at Michael Schur's wedding. They worked at SNL at the same time. I think he wrote a few FJM columns as a guest columnist.

I think I've made my peace with the one-game-and-out scenario. By telling myself that getting knocked out of the playoffs is the way most of your seasons end when you are a fan of a good baseball team, so hopefully we get used to it.

i mean that was probably an easy transition for you since the last two times we were in the playoffs you were like "well if we lose game 1 there's basically no chance we can win the series now"

2-for-2.

I doubt I actually said that, but I've long since accepted that some weird imaginary version of my posts show up on your screen, so I'll take the free credit for being right twice.
