Fine, whatever. You made other points about Manning and playoffs randomness...which maybe would work for one flukey run, but for two...not as much. Like I said, you're making a lot of effort to write off his accomplishments because you're not blown away by him...which is fine, I'm not saying you have to love him...but he's got an extremely solid resume.

wild card going to the superbowl is like the definition of playoff randomness (really, it's hard to say that ANY team going to the superbowl isn't - but i digress)

the other team was amazing because it had peyton manning on it

honestly, i don't care all that much about playoff resumes unless they have some insanely consistent success in them (and still i'd think that would have more to do with consistently making them than anything else - which is what i do care about, the regular season)

i mean he made two superbowls in 13 years, which, is cool, whatever...i'm not sure it says a lot about him as a coach. definitely not more than his (very solid) regular season resume says.

i'm not making an effort to write off anything because i don't like him or love him. i'm writing off playoff accomplishments (especially goofy ones like "in two separate conferences") because i don't think they mean that much in most cases.

What on earth would impress you about a coach if you're writing off everything he's done successfully? Two Super Bowls? Luck. 4 straight division titles? Amazing QB. Playoff success twice in three years with a bleh QB? He wasn't THAT bleh.

Whatever.

I think you're having trouble reading or something.

I said his very solid regular season resume is what matters, not goofy anecdotes like "he went to two superbowls in two different conferences" YAY!

I'm not down on the hire at all.

Really good and really safe hire by Pace. If Fox doesnt work out, he wont go down with him. But he'll get credit if Fox does well.

That's a great point. I think Pace saw how quickly Emery was ran out after making a bold hire that failed spectacularly, and while I don't think that's the main reason why he went after Fox, it certainly was a benefit to it. I also think the organization is happy because, which they definitely want to win, I think they were extremely embarassed last year and want to do anything to avoid that embarassment in the future so in a way they'd be partially satisfied with an 8-8 team that keeps their off the field activities out of the news.

The two conferences thing does not matter, but the two super bowl things is at least notable and not worthy of your robotic scorn.

It might be or it might not be. Football playoffs are just noise and there's no telling what is owed to merit and what is owed to complete dumb luck.

What matters is having a history of getting there.

Considering Fox, Im hoping the new coordinators are Gase and Dennis Allen. Keith Armstrong for Special Teams.

Getting way way ahead of myself here...

With Gase getting so much hype as a HC candidate this time around but apparently being passed over by all teams, what will his next candidacy look like? I'm thinking best case scenario is he does a great job with Cutler and becomes Fox's de facto heir. But with all the hype this time around I would expect other teams to come calling as early as next year. If they stumble and get nothing out of the remaining Cutler era, he will need to hit on the next QB and offensive system before he gets another shot as a HC candidate.

That would be alright

Serious question: Would you want the Bears to try and draft a QB at some point in this draft with an eye towards moving on from Jay when the guaranteed $$ is up?

Of course, why wouldnt anybody?

He will be gone quickly. They underachieved on offense, if he gets it close to 2 years ago, he's gone. For him, the only OC position available with any talent would be Atlanta and Denver. I think Kubiak is going to Denver which would hurt Gase.

Of course, you don't pass up someone because you think they'll do well enough to earn a promotion.

Just curious. Some folks could actually want to stick with Jay.

You could draft someone like C Jones in the 2-3rd and develop him for a couple of years and cut Cutler then

An "eye towards moving on" is just that, an eye. It does not mean they will, should or can move on. If Jay is back this year, and things go well, why wouldn't you plan on sticking with him longer term? You should draft QBs all the time, regardless of your feelings toward the guy currently on the roster.

i don't know why this would be

Yeah, football playoffs aren't a total crapshoot

They're one and done through 4 rounds and football is a sport where any one play can, out of nowhere, drastically tip the scales in a game. They're pretty damn crapshooty.

And despite that, football games tend to be won pretty reliably by heavy favorites. A single football game is still less crapshooty than a seven-game baseball series.

not a high bar you're setting there.

Also, baseball games are won pretty reliably by heavy favorites too...that's why they're heavy favorites (these situations just happen to be relatively rare. but they aren't that common in the NFL either). not saying it's as bad as baseball, but a -200 baseball matchup isn't going the other way all that often, either.
