Another DC option?

@MikeSilver

I'm told word in coaching circles is 49ers DC Vic Fangio now wants out of SF unless he gets HC job... or Mike Shanahan does.

If he's avail., he's one of the best ones to get.

Of course, they'll have to get a HC 1st.

RE: Ryan Pace

“Ryan is a great hire,” said Polian, who now serves as an analyst for ESPN. “Ryan is a guy at the top of our list in all of our discussions. He did stellar work (in New Orleans). He worked in a pressurized situation with high expectations. (George McCaskey and Ted Phillips) knew what they wanted. He will fit in fine.”

Polian was quick to dismiss any notions that the 37-year-old Pace might be too young for the job.

“Ryan has plenty of experience,” Polian said. “Guys are coming into the league earlier than they did in my generation. Ryan has a lot more experience than we had.”

John Elway references John Fox "exploring what his options were" in the time following the game. He likely means the #Bears opening.

I do not understand this line.

Are they saying Fox asked Elway what his contract status was, or if he had plans to fire him? They seem to be hinting that after the game Fox called somebody involved with the Bears and asked if he could have the job.

Why would John Fox leave a good situation to come to a piece of [expletive] organization like the Bears? I'm gonna assume the McCaskey's are trying to make a "splash" a la Joe Maddon and offered him a deal he couldn't refuse. One problem, John Fox is not Joe Maddon.

The way I read it, is that after the game he called someone with the Bears to find out if there was still a chance at that job, and if the Bears were interested. I don't think it means anything is a done deal, just that there's mutual interest.

He and Elway didn't get along. And he has a relationship with Accorsi.

I just don't get why anyone would be running to the Bears job right now unless money is a factor. The organization is terrible and completely in flux, the roster is old, and they might not have a QB next season because the fans want to run the good QB out of town.

Stop applying logic and let the man be negative, Bandeon.

Presumably he could ask the GM if he wanted to keep that QB and then if the answer satisfied him, the guy probably would not concern himself with stupid fans (and Dan Bernstein organizational overhaul 5-year plan idiocy).

A strong case can be made that the Bears are much more talented than a 5-11 team should be and with a couple moves and competent coaching could be able to contend in 2015.

The talent on that side of the ball is all old and falling apart.

Jeffrey, Cutler and Bennett are not old. Forte still appears to have a year or two left in him.

Seems to be no shortage of potentially really good coordinators, based on guys out of a job, assuming they'd be willing to make a lateral move if not a HC.

Which, I guess that makes up for the shortage of HC candidates.

It seems to me that those candidates are primarily defensive coordinators though.

I think people have stopped trusting "top" OCs to an extent because almost all of them have elite QBs. Other than Kubiak who turned us down.

So are the Bears in danger of having a tampering charge lobbed at them?

I would doubt it, but who knows.

Defensive head coaching candidates appear to be the best too. But I feel like there are always more good defensive coaches anyway. You really only see QB coaches, and the highest regarded OL coaches become coordinators, and not all teams have the former. But on defense, you have LB, DB, DL coaches all becoming coordinators at any given point.

From everything I'm gathering, Fox is free to go anywhere he wants. He signed a 4 year deal with Denver and that's how long he was there.
