We'll end up with Toub

I'm not sure I would feel any differently about this than any other coordinator hires, honestly. I think he has a good enough rep among players that he'll be a good leader. As with the other guys it kind of comes down to the coordinator hires.

Would Toub want to come back to the Bears? Is there bad blood there?

You'd think any bad blood would only be between Emery, but even that wouldn't be so much bad blood as just awkwardness. The Bears let him walk for a lateral move when they really didn't have to.

Well even so, other than Chicago fan/media speculation, I don't think there's been one credible source where any of the teams with HC openings have even given Toub a sniff.

Yea even when Ballard was in play it seemed more speculative than concrete.

They really had to.

You can't interview the guy for HC, eliminate him early in the process and then force him to stay on as an assistant under the guy that beat him out.

Which still doesn't make sense. At least interview the guy.

Well, they did 2 years ago, when he was already on staff and he didn't cut it then. Might be that they feel they already know what they need to know.

But then, that was Emery...

Yes it was in their best interest to, but there was no obligation to do so.

Well I don't think he's quite Trestman either. Even if you want to remove his Manning years he's just over 500 and a SB appearance. Depends how you feel about his defensive chops and ability to bring in a good OC.

What's the cliff's notes version of why John Fox is bad?

I think the consensus among those who don't want him would be centered around Manning elevating him. I'd have to study his Carolinas teams closer but just in WL record it's about on par with Kubiak in Houston.

I'd rather have Shanahan.

A quick glance at Fox's past staffs isn't all that impressive.

Yep. Lack of ability to find OCs. His teams can never get over the hump. He's ultra conservative, though he's been less so since the Broncos blew that game to the Ravens Peyton's 1st year....but I'd imagine he'd go back to that without a top 3 QB in history. Defenses have typically underachieved, despite him being a defensive coach.

Yea my cursory glance at his offense defense ranks in Carolina are a bit lack luster. I expected slightly higher defensive ranks, though I wasn't looking at advanced stats. He's certainly not sexy but I'm not sure I'm ready to hate on the idea.

isnt every available retread coach .500 or worse lifetime?

i dunno, i don't think i'd be too upset with the hire. i'd rather have shanahan though.

I'm not quite ready to hate it either. But a conservative defensive minded coach with very limited offensive abilities/connections who turns 60 in a month is probably not getting the most out of this roster for a few years.
