if montero was worth 3/$40 the dbacks wouldn't just be giving him away.

conversely...if he wasn't worth 3/40 we wouldn't reportedly be offering players on top of offering to pay his contract obligations

It really is unfortunate he's terrible at baseball.

Then I guess it really just depends on which front office one trusts to quantify player value between Theo or Tony LaRussa.

This was from Buster Olney's ranking of catchers (input from GM's and evaluators) where he had Montero 9th:

Arizona has talked to other teams about trading Montero and getting out from the $40 million owed to the catcher for the next three seasons. But maybe the expectations for him to be a middle-of-the-order hitter were outsized, because he does some things well: He has a .342 career on-base percentage, and has thrown well in his career.

Perhaps the addition of Henry Blanco to the coaching staff helped him in 2014, when Montero worked to reinvest himself in his catching, because some of Montero’s pitch-framing metrics were the best in the majors.

Keep working Hank.

last 3 seasons:

vs. opposite-side pitching

Montero: .770 OPS / .339 wOBA / 110 wRC+

Castillo: .861 OPS / .378 wOBA / 139 wRC+

vs. same-side pitching

Montero: .632 OPS / .283 wOBA / 71 wRC+

Castillo: .680 OPS / .302 wOBA / 87 wRC+

our total C production in '14: .620 OPS / .278 wOBA / 72 wRC+

My concern about Montero, which I've stated several times, is that his production has dropped a lot in the past two years since he injured his back. Those numbers against righties during that time is .728/.330/99. It's still an upgrade over Castillo. But I think the upside of those earlier years is probably gone.

While that's true he has declined, I wonder how a reduced work load would help him. Going from 130-140 games to a 110-120 range may help him a little.

Looking at these numbers, how is Montero in any way better the Castillo? Is it against right handed pitching?

Yes. It is about having better numbers against ~70% of the pitchers out there.

Plus not having a crappy backup.
