In a Miguel Montero deal, source says #Cubs wouldn't be moving pieces from 40-man roster or trading talent that's close to big-league ready.

According to PSD Mooney said we'd be taking back the whole contract in a deal, which would make sense then that the return are some low level/non 40-man guys. Also hopefully a sign we are willing (able?) to spend a good amount of money this offseason. Edited by Cubswin11

I sure as [expletive] don't put $40 mil worth of stock in it.

better not cry poor on lester and give a 30 yr old catcher $40 mil to OPS .700 and be pretty good at catching balls.

Homophobe!

So if the offseason was Lester, Hammel, and Montero... that'd put those three players at roughly $45-$50 million in commitments next season (unless they backload Lester's deal if he signs). Do the Cubs make any more big moves in that situation or are they done?

I like Montero, and he makes good sense for the Cubs. But unless you think he'd get 3/40 as a FA, giving up any talent whatsoever to trade for him makes zero sense. I have to think the D-backs are eating a bit of the contract.

Martin got 5/80, is a few months older, both have similar k/bb rates and career slash lines and both are considered very good defensively. I don't think it's a stretch to think he'd get 3-4 years and more than 40 million on the open market.

If the Cubs are taking most of the money as reported they better be giving up next to nothing.

They are.

In fact, I would put decent money on you never having heard of whoever they trade for him.

Montero had a better offensive season than Castillo last year.

So saying you trust fWAR but not pitch framing is saying "I really place a lot of faith in Fangraphs' defensive catcher valuations."

I believe there is a middle ground. There is just no way in hell there is a nearly 50 run difference between them based solely on pitch framing. That is ridiculous.

I'm with the pitch framing train of thought, but now it kinda really has to be as big as it might be with how much this guy is going to cost. Ugh. Really want to know who they're giving up.

I think running 3-year-averages will give you a better idea of what you're getting than just looking at last year (when Montero's credited with a huge number).

But $13m is like nothing now. That's just what average players cost.

I do.

Martin is coming off a career year, and Montero has had two down years in a row. Montero also has some of the worst throwing numbers in the game. I like him, as I said, but a catcher in his 30's coming off two declining years whose defense is a mixed bag (yes, I value pitch framing) is not a comparison with a guy coming off his best year, and arguably the best overall receiver in the sport.

Montero as a FA would get, I'd guess, 2-16M. Maybe with a club option for the third year.

$13M a year or whatever is not hard to live up to.
