I wonder what the best and worst 30 day WAR was the past few seasons.

Tulo had a pretty insane WAR considering half a season of play this year. I'd assume one of his months had to be close to 3.

Baez, Alcantara, CJ Edwards, and high ceiling Rookie/Low A guy for Upton. Too much?

WAY too much.

I saw Shark at the Cubs convention a couple of years ago. Emerged right after they announced his arb agreement - and he was pissed. It sucks that it didn't work out with him, he got a real nice signing bonus and endured all the crap. Now that it's all seeming to come together, it seems that he got out at the wrong time.

Shark seemed pissy about the Cubs FO on Espn Radio today.

Don't mind the idea of something like Almora, Castillo (assuming Ross is as good as signed), and like 1-2 of Watkins/Szczur/Amaya/Villanueva/Jeimer for the Upton brothers. Edited by Cubswin11

They can bat him lower in the order and tell him to just have fun and kill whichever pitches you can make contact with, and as long as he bats. .230, his walks, glove, and home runs will make him above average at 2nd base.

you kinda just described Danny Espinosa

Hard to blame him, really. But it is a business.

I think some of you are a bit unrealistic about what it would take to get J. Upton. He's a 26 yr old corner OF'er who since 2008 has been below .800 in OPS only twice (those were .785 and .799) and coming off a year where he had a 132 OPS+ and 3.9 fWAR.

I'm not suggesting he's Stanton or Trout, but he's probably in the tier below.

He's great, but he is only around for 1 year, and with Atlanta apparently in rebuild mode they don't get much out of keeping him.

He's also below Jason Heyward, so I don't know why he should cost more to acquire.

I really wish they wouldn't have traded Hayward so early or at least wish we would have decided to go after a bat when he was available. He fits exactly what it seems we are looking for. I would have done Baez and CJ for him.

The natural counterpoint is to point to the Samardzija and Heyward trades. 1 year of a 3-4 win player(potentially more in Heyward's case), even one with great talent and still in his prime, does not fetch an enormous return.

Justin Upton would be a huge acquisition, and we would all love it.

What would suck would be giving up parts of the future (Baez, Alcantara, etc) to get Upton for one year, and then him walking for a huge contract. I just don't think this FO would ever consider that because this 2015 season isn't a shoe in for the post season as of yet. I see them making a much wiser choice.

Now, trading EJ, Wood, and Almora for Justin Upton would be a good move.

I realize Heyward is well thought of around here, but I guess I see Upton as more powerful and consistently productive at the plate. That said, perhaps I am wrong on what "the market" (Giants and others) may be offering for him.

Heyward is significantly better.

FWIW, 2015 Steamer Projections -

Upton - 3.1 WAR

Heyward - 5.0 WAR

I would be more inclined to overpay for a 1 year rental like Upton if he had elite tools that really addressed the holes in our current projected roster, but his contact and strikeout rates are not really not impressive. The Cubs shouldn't have any problems with finding righthanded power with the current projected lineup, particularly once Bryant is called up.

Already did this in the Heyward trade thread and don't wish to de-rail this one. We will just have to see whether all of that defense-based production translates year-over-year.

From MLBTR:

After signing Jon Lester, the Cubs are now pursuing outfielder Jonny Gomes in an apparent effort to get the band back together, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (via Twitter).

I mean, if the Cubs are seriously looking for a corner OF bat to significantly help right away, I'd ask the Dodgers about Puig's availability and hope I still get Ned Colletti.

Perfect reaction. Gomes is complete garbage. I have to think Theo/Jed are smarter than buying into some BS "leadership" stuff from a guy who sucks.

Rollins to the Dodgers is apparently done.

I just read an article where Heyman asserts that he had a "nice year" last season.
