but why would that make a difference re: the acceptability of a non-hitting catcher

Because then you only have one offensive black hole you have to tolerate in the lineup.

Is there really a difference between a team playing with 2 black holes against a team with 1 black hole vs. a team with 1 black hole against a team with 0?

Hard to buy that.

Jesus Shark really does not like the Cubs. He was asked on B+B his thoughts on the Cubs finally turning the corner and his response was "I did everything I was asked to do as a Cub, and I'm proud that I was a professional during my time there".

He grit his teeth enough for Dan to say he can tell there was something bittersweet in his answer.

I don't blame him at all; he seemed really frustrated the last couple of years. It's got to be tough to basically see everyone you played with part ways from the team and have to wade through multiple seasons of cellar-dwelling. Given all that, that's a perfectly diplomatic and understandable response.

Also the fact he was jerked around with a lot in his first few years between being a relief pitcher/starter going to Iowa and coming back. Though obviously his performance, or lack of played a role, the organization didn't seem to really give him a clear path until a few years ago.

Hub said he sounded a little jealous of the attention they showed Lester.

If he sees them throwing gobs of money at Lester, where they wouldn't extend him at what he deemed a fair price, then of course he's going to be bitter.

Gee Russell and Lester or just Shark. Tough call...

Yeah, he should think good for them, I'm happy they're better off without me. Jesus.

At the time wasnt the rumored extension 5/75? For what he had done up to that point seemed petty fair.

I thought they had offered all the way up to 5/95, but Shark wanted an extension that exceeded Homer Bailey's.

I don't believe I ever heard 5/95. My recollection was they started at something insulting like 5/60 then upped it to 5/75 once he was good

CHC intention is to continue to build the team with more around Lester. If they didn't sign him, would take a more conservative route.

Screw them for being willing to shut down instead of going after a TORP elsewhere.

But LOL don't care because it didn't happen that way. It's go time.

i'm not totally convinced they wouldn't have tried to bring in shields on a shorter deal, given his background with maddon.

i'm also not really sure where they're going to add. unless hendricks isn't considered part of the rotation, they've got one rotation slot left, and about 30 arms that could conceivably fill it. i don't see the need to get into a mini bidding war for someone like mccarthy when one of the internal candidates is likely to fill the role reasonably well. the only other place i can see them upgrading is in LF, but again, i'm not sure that you want to put a big contract in that spot given that bryant may end up moving there to allow russell or castro to take over at 3B.

maybe they let wesley wright go because they're planning to bring in a lefthanded reliever? or do they hope that wada fills that role?

LOVELOVELOVE lester signing but very prepared for the retrospective in which we score 850 runs in 2016 and lol about him being a big deal

(850 runs in 2016 after making the playoffs the year before, of course)

Its all in for the White Sox. No way they re-sign Shark. I believe Sale will hit FA after 2016 too...provided he's healthy, no way he's re-upping either (provided he stays healthy).

So if the Cubs met with Ross, I am assuming Welington gets dealt really soon? I cannot tell if its intuition or indigestion, but I think another trade is coming today. Follow up with a Ross signing.

Power bats:

CarGo

Upton (maybe lester signing convinces him to waive NTC)

Kemp

Cespedes

Mid Range veteran bats:

Headley

Bourn

Utley

A couple of long shot names: Alex Gordon, Longoria, Tulo(potential 3B option??)
