I saw Valbuena for Grandal mentioned on PSD as a framework and don't know why I didn't think of that before.

I just wonder if it could get done straight up. If so, then I prefer Grandal to Susac.

Yeah, hard to say how Preller would value those two, or even some ancillary options to further tilt value like Wood, Maybin, or even Lake if they got really desperate for young power potential.

Wouldn't you rather have the years of control on Susac?

I feel like Grandal has quite a bit more offensive upside, but then again his spike in K rate and decline in his defense is cause for worry.

I don't think you could get either Grandal or Susac straight up for Valbuena, but either would be a very logical move for the Cubs to make.

I guess Ian Kennedy in SD is also on the block. He has the peripherals of a near ace, but rather pedestrian ERA and "normal" metrics. He could be undervalued and would likely be cheaper to obtain from them than Cashner or Ross. He does carry some Jackson-esque risk of consistently underperforming his peripherals, though.

A trade with SD could be very interesting.

I think the Giants would be more willing to make the move but I agree that straight up would be difficult, but I don't think it would take much a kicker either.

Kennedy's career FIP is 3.91. His xFIP is 3.96. His ERA is 3.93.

I'm not overly worried about him being the type to underperform his peripherals.

It looks like Kennedy is a 2-3 win pitcher most years, and a 4-5 win pitcher when he can halve his HR rate. With only one year for him I'm not overly interested in trading real players to get him, which is what it would require.

Susac is interesting, but I wonder if we're starting to lean too far towards 'anyone but Castillo' if he's *that* desirable a candidate. He looks like a fine prospect, but he's got 95 MLB PAs to his name. Plus as a RH C there's not much of a platoon/pairing benefit with Castillo. There's enough prospect risk on the roster as is, IMO.

Rosenthal is mentioning that SD is getting hits on Grandal, Rivera, and Austin Hedges.

Poor John Baker lost his job to Grandal and was pissed he was busted for PEDs. Looks like it could potentially happen again.

I'm sure Parks is on the Hedges train.

LHP Michael Roth (Angels) cleared waivers for a second time and elected to become a free agent. He set a bunch of records while at SC and is very durable. Would love to see the Cubs take a flyer on him.

Hedges would be nice. Isn't he a defensive specialist though? Wonder if a tandem of him and Schwarber when they're both ready could be good. Late inning defensive replacement and could spell Schwarber once or twice a week to keep him fresh? Or would doing that waste Hedges' defensive value? He doesn't look like he has much offensive upside.

It's probably more likely that neither pan out as major league catchers than both.

That's a pretty good outcome for the Cubs. Keeps the Padres and Giants on the lookout for offensive upgrades, adds to Arizona's payroll so that they might be more inclined to trade Montero, isn't a hugely inflationary AAV to impact other FAs, etc.

Tomas, who reportedly turned 24 earlier this month, is a corner outfielder who has spent parts of the last seven years playing for the Havana Industriales.

It cracks me up that in 2014 this is still an issue

People still think Obama was born in the Middle East.

He's saying it wasn't his Red Sox "source" that burned him but one in Cincinnati. I am thinking maybe he only has a source in Boston realized he pretty much told him to eat a dick on Twitter and made up the "source" in Cincinnati.
