That would certainly get the nobs in the local press murmuring about the Cubs quiet offseason so far, especially when they whiff on Lester. Who knows how "reliable" that source is - the Pantagraph is a real newspaper, albeit a college one, but I have my doubts.

the pantagraph isn't a college newspaper

What do the White Sox even have of quality to get him?

Adam Eaton, Jose Quintana, Carlos Rodon

Quintana is better than Shark.

Depending on whether Billy's attempting a fire sale or simply add offense, Alexei Ramirez could be a start.

Rodon cannot be traded and Quintana is better than Samardzija and under control for longer. I think Beane is trying to re-stock his farm system. Maybe Tim Anderson and some other pieces?

I'd have to get at least 2 of Anderson/Montas/Danish and another intriguing young wild card like Hawkins.

Just saw on MLBTR that the A's could be waiting for Lester and Scherzer to sign. I think that idea makes a ton of sense.

Jim Benson isn't exactly a reliable source, but he has connections to Levine and Kaplan, so who knows.

Since they both became full-time starters at the ML level they are comparable but age absolutely matters.

Name GS IP K/9 BB/9 HR/9 BABIP LOB% GB% HR/FB ERA FIP xFIP WAR

Quintana 87 529 7.14 2.51 0.8 0.303 73.1 % 44.7 % 8.7 % 3.55 3.55 3.77 10.6

Samardzija 94 608 8.82 2.62 0.96 0.298 72.5 % 47.9 % 12.2 % 3.7 3.5 3.29 9.6

I tried to format this so it's readable but not sure if I did it right.

Hearing this too. “@Buster_ESPN: Other teams say the Padres have gotten more aggressive in marketing Yasmani Grandal in trade discussions.”

Here's to hoping we are one of the teams in on him.

Yes, please.

Maybe Valbuena and a B prospect gets it done.

I'd prefer holding off on trading Valbuena until we know whether Bryant can actually play third base.

Between Baez, Bryant, Russell, and even LaStella, I think we can be reasonably comfortable in the ability to fill in 2B and 3B. Alcantara is still around too. If there needs to be another IF added, you can always use Castillo to help get it too, although that's a more natural fit for trading Wood.

Yep, plus, might be a nice time to sell high on Valbuena. I'm not thrilled moving a guy with a decent OBP since we're lacking in that area, but his 2014 slash line compared to Panda's and I believe is even better than Headley's. I'm wondering if he may have more value than we might think....

Might be terrible, might be a LF, not in the majors yet and replacement level deep backup.

You can trade anybody if the return is right and you plan to acquire a replacement elsewhere, but right now Valbuena is needed pretty badly here.

I know as fans we don't necessarily have a great idea whether Bryant can handle third, but you have to hope the FO has a better idea and doesn't need spring training or a few months to still figure out. It's not like it's a position change. He's been playing it all along. Even if you think he may eventually move off the position, what we're really looking at is the next year or two and not when he's 29 years old.

Does Grandal have more upside than Castillo? Just looking at Fangraphs and it looks like Castillo is currently the better hitter and throws out more runners than Grandal. Is the thought that Castillo and Grandal would platoon? Noticed Grandal's numbers batting from the right side are pretty terrible.

It seems that Valbuena is under appreciated.
