I interpreted it as eventually they'll be the team like the Dodgers or Red Sox or Yankees and their name will always come up with every big FA like the three aforementioned teams, but they aren't in a situation to be that team yet.

That said, they certainly won't sign anyone "elite" this offseason.

If they want to be feared they need to start spending God damn money on top free agents.

If only everyone would stop acting like the offseason is over the second the Dodgers get involved in free agency.

Rogers did also write this:

The Cubs have actually made an offer higher than the $130 million to $140 million that has been reported, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Did you hope they were already considered the most dangerous team in free agency before you saw that quote

I'd say that's far from a certainty.

Come on, that's a disappointing quote.

Theo is the master of saying extremely logical and practical things that make sense and allowing people (particularly media people) to read whatever the hell they want into them. Right before he said that he said something about how they have to extend themselves beyond what they're comfortable with on some free agents but they have stick to their principles at the same time.

Basically, a lot of times he says a lot of sensible things without really telling you much at all about what they're doing.

I just don't like hearing the team's president going out of his way seemingly trying to temper FA expectations right in the middle of when we're all hoping they're going to spending big on FA. It's a tad disconcerting.

Where's the rest of the interview? I'd be curious to read it.

I actually meant to say he probably said that but now that you mention it I feel like I did see something on Twitter.

Here's a lot of it, along with a little more context on the feared team thing (basically was saying we're not the Yankees or Dodgers yet)

Random internet guy says that he met a friend of Brady Aiken in his stats class, and that if granted FA, Aiken would like to sign with the Cubs or Padres. So...there's that.

Is there even any chance of that whatsoever at this point?

No idea. Honestly, that's why I posted it here...so someone could tell me the level of ridiculousness.

No chance whatsoever. He didn't even file a grievance, only Nix did.

"Out of his way" lol. You think he hung up on boras to call Rogers and make that statement?

Rogers is a complete hack and ESPN 1000 should have never moved him off hockey. His entire schtick is being the wet blanket at all times and he has no grasp of how to apply statistics in analysis. He provided no context on this quote so as to get the negative reaction he likes, and when you read the context of the quote you can see Rogers was only trying to mislead the majority of people who only read headlines. I despise Jesse Rogers.

we don't have the overall capacity of those teams yet, but with our roster construction and payroll situation we should have similar wherewithal when it comes to the moves we need/want to make.

This. Our committed payroll is around $60 million, even if PTR won't let us eclipse $100m that's close to $40m to spend. Rogers is just trying to rile up the masses to pitchfork and torch status. This is about as nothing a comment as Theo can make.

Yes, that is exactly what I think happened.

He also thought Kris Bryant should and would start 2014 in the big leagues. He's an idiot.
